Elias Crow had been on fire for exactly four seconds before he realized something was wrong. At first, his mind tried to explain it away. Fire was loud. Fire was violent. Fire hurt. That was what he knew, what everyone knew. But the sound filling the kitchen wasn’t the sharp whoosh of a burner flaring too high or the angry spit of grease meeting flame. This sound was lower. Deeper. It thrummed.
The kitchen smelled like smoke—but not the familiar warning smell, not the kind that meant toast left too long or a pot forgotten on the stove. This smoke was sharper. Metallic. It scraped the back of his throat and stung his eyes, as if the air itself were vibrating under pressure. The old gas stove rattled. Not shook—rattled. Like something inside it had developed a pulse. Elias stood frozen, one hand still wrapped around the handle of the frying pan. The oil inside had gone too hot, shimmering unnaturally, and now the flames leapt higher than they ever should have, licking up the sides in sudden, violent tongues of blue and orange.
