Story
At first, Katherine dismisses her early-20s intern as a millennial ‘snowflake’: soft, entitled, moralistic. Yet as Lily’s youth and beauty increasingly remind Katherine of everything she once had, she starts to develop a dark fascination with her new colleague. But is Lily as perfect as she seems - or does she have a sinister hidden agenda? As Katherine is drawn into an obsessive power struggle with the intern, a disturbing portrait emerges of two women hiding dark secrets - and who are desperate enough to do anything to come out on top.

I watched you move in next door and thought we might be friends. I saw you watching from the window - and knew I’d have to keep you well away from my husband. I started to trust you. Confide in you. I started to mistrust you. Suspect you. I was confused when I blacked out after an evening at your place. Was I really that drunk? I came up with a plan. A plan to make you both pay.

The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

Summary
Six friends on a luxury yacht. Only five are coming back....
A dream vacation turns deadly in this pulse-pounding, twisting revenge thriller set on the Riviera about dark female friendships.
Do you dare step on board The Lion's Den?
Belle likes to think herself immune to the dizzying effects of fabulous wealth.
But when her best friend Summer invites her on a glamorous girls' getaway to the Mediterranean aboard her billionaire boyfriend's yacht, the only sensible answer is yes.
Belle hopes the trip will be a much-needed break from her stalled acting career and uniquely humiliating waitressing job, but once aboard the luxurious yacht The Lion's Den it becomes clear that all is not as it seems.
The dream vacation quickly becomes a nightmare as Belle and the handful of other girlfriends Summer has invited are treated more like prisoners than guests by their controlling host and Belle comes to see Summer for what she truly is: a vicious gold digger who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Belle soon realises she's going to have to keep her wits about her - and her own secret close to her chest - if she wants to make it off the yacht alive....
Critic reviews
"Gripped me from the first page. This riveting tale of friendship and betrayal is sure to be the breakout hit of the summer." (Kathryn Stockett, number one New York Times best-selling author of The Help)

Lovely Luxurious Mystery Cruise for Lockdown
I have to say I usually stick to audiobooks with UK or Irish narrators but I bought this one without checking as I was longing for a little escapism and this sounded just the ticket ... and it was! I am not great at US accents but this one was very pleseant and put me in mind of characters from Buffy The Vampire Slayer, so I felt right at home!
I want to get my two gripes out of the way first ... Italy in 2020 does not have bathrooms offering complimentary cigarettes ... I have in fact ever been to a "Ladies" ANYWHERE that offers an ornamental display of cigarettes along with the regular soap/hand moisturiser etc .... and the girls smoke them and then put them out on the FLOOR??? What kind of a loo is this ... so luxurious it caters to its guests every need including illegal smoking (as it is forbidden in restaurants/loos in Europe) and yet so downmarket it does not provide ashtrays and the girls are so low class they grind out cigarettes with their heels ... on marble floors in a super expensive restaurant's lavish bathroom???
Second ... Italian police stations do have phones ... wifi and of course mobile phone network coverage ... um rather hard for them to operate without it - and the whole town was without mobile coverage too??? Hmmmm
I think an outage would have helped this whole episode be more credible - but then I suppose it all was rather far fetched ... but if you are looking for escapism I suppose you must also be prepared to suspend disbelief also.
Apart from that I really enjoyed the right riveting yacht ride of it all, with private planes and design your own bikini shops - since travel seems off the menu for the time being, this was just what the doctor ordered.
Narrator was good and whole thing a pleasant interlude much like Nancy Drew meets the Real Housewives ... easy fun listening with glamour, mystery, exotic locations and of course ... MURDER :-)

A book to listen to whilst getting on with other things
This was fairly okay as a listen, good narrator made it possible to finish easily. I could switch it on and do things around the house and not worry about missing anything, because i could pick up the gist very easily if needed. One to use to aid dozing off at night if struggling to sleep and not having to back track too much the next day. Will be used for this again if we have another lockdown, but on the whole okay.

Shame about the ending...
Given the length of this, it was very easy to get through. The setting, the characters and the plot bubbling were all built nicely. The suggestion of an unreliable, false friend is sown without it being obvious who is using who. A drama on the seas around beautiful coastline plays out. What then disappointed was the ending. Having built the mystery nicely, the denouement unfolds a bit like the end of a Mills and Boon novel with the long arm of convenience employed and things falling into place in a very corny manner out of step with the care taken over the many pages that had gone before. Such a shame - I’d hesitate to read this author again if I felt her books ended as lazily as this abs without treating the reader with enough respect that things were really concluded in a remotely credible manner.
Good narration.
