Summary

In a “sexy, suspenseful read,” #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts delivers “a slow-burning fuse of a plot that ultimately explodes in a nail-biting conclusion".

Shelby Foxworth lost her husband. Then she lost her illusions....

The man who took her from Tennessee to an exclusive Philadelphia suburb left her in crippling debt. He was an adulterer and a liar, and when Shelby tracks down his safe-deposit box, she finds multiple IDs. The man she loved wasn’t just dead. He never really existed.

Shelby takes her three-year-old daughter and heads south to seek comfort in her hometown, where she meets someone new: Griff Lott, a successful contractor. But her husband had secrets she has yet to discover. Even in this small town, surrounded by loved ones, danger is closer than she knows - and threatens Griff, as well. And an attempted murder is only the beginning...

One big yawn

It was obvious from the beginning where this story would lead. The narration leaves much to be desired. I cringed every time I heard the child's voice. Speaking of said child, she was a perfect little girl and it got irritating real quick. Nora Roberts has written some interesting thrillers but this wasn't one of them. I think it's time to stop supporting Ms Robert's writing factory.

You know what you're getting

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

You know where you're going with a Nora Roberts' suspense romance but that's half the fun of the journey. It is worth listening to if you want a traditional romance novel with a heroine escaping a past that includes violence from the worst kind of man - and the odd malicious or cold woman -.and finding her path in life. With Nora Roberts the heroine will face fear and heartache down and be thrown together with family or friends old and new as well as a lasting love interest who will stay the course as she finds out what she wants. It is not breathtaking, but there is comforting easy listen to be found in the escapism and the attention to details of idealised small town American life. I like the emphasis on friendships as well as romance that Nora Roberts adds into the mix so it isn't all about finding the right man. In fact the relationships are only sealed as permanent when our heroine knows where she is (and how strong she is) in other areas of her life. I am also a total sucker for the animal characters Roberts writes and her loving description of the landscape, homes and towns she sets her stories within. Her books are like a road trip - it's the places you visit on route, the view and the company of the characters that make the book time well-spent.

The dialogue is often edging on ridiculous - does anyone actually speak like that? Despite that I find myself liking most of the characters. Each voice is well narrated by January LaVoy.

So, when I need predictable, tidy endings with some adrenaline moments, Roberts is a good bet for an enjoyable listen. If that's not what you're looking for, she may not be the author (and this may not be the book) you are looking for.

Narration not brilliant

Overall not bad if a little predictable but the narration really was really annoying in parts. Particularly the part of Cally. Would not recommend

My first and last Nora Roberts

Sweet love story but would have been suitable if condensed into a mills and boon romance. Speed read type of book. Not sure small town Southern people actually are the way they are depicted..terribly simplistic. Narration can only do so much for a poor story. The little child was horrendous though, disturbing!
I'd never listened to a Nora Roberts story and I had to do a double take thinking this was some sort of spoof.
Anyways if you are after a padded weak storyline this one is a winner

Predictable and not very believable

What would have made The Liar better?

A better, more believable storyline. The heroine is recently widowed and left with an unbearably cute toddler and a load of debts. In remarkably short order she deals with the worst debts (don't they have probate in the USA), is reunited with her loving and morally upright family and meets a gorgeous man. The twists are predictable and I was on a sugar high by the end.

Would you ever listen to anything by Nora Roberts again?

I have listened to and enjoyed other stories by Nora Roberts but this was not one of them. I would be more careful in choosing a book by her again.

What does January LaVoy bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The narrator had a very pleasant voice and did a good job.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Liar?

Don't know where to start.

Fabulous!

Possibly one of the best Norah Croft books yet. Has everything. Drama, romance, children, family and a strong woman. Couldn't be better.

Trust again

Shelby had the wool pulled over her by the ‘husband’ left widowed (maybe) she and her daughter returned to her hometown then she met Griffin … twists and turns of troubles but all gently done. Another good book by Nora Roberts.
