About this listen

I didn’t think hockey was the game for me…now I’m obsessed.

My new neighbor, Ben Stirling, is a beautiful, famous ex-player. A living NHL legend. A single dad with sad eyes and a smile I feel in my knees.

I’ve never met anyone like him. He’s what would you’d get if you squeezed masculinity through a sieve. He’s the grit. The pulp. The hard stuff that leaves a sweet taste in your mouth. On top of that, he’s kind and funny, and did I mention he’s the most beautiful man I’ve ever laid eyes on?

Obviously, he’s straight.

And obviously, that’s fine.

It’s not like I’m going to flirt with him. Or fall for him.

This was so wholesome, it truly was one of those audiobooks where you could listen without even realising how far into the book you are. I was lost in the story and the characters and I just couldn’t get enough of them! I loved them and I’ll loved the dynamic of their relationship it was just wow

I needed this!

I thoroughly enjoyed every second of this beautiful love story. The characters were well written, I laughed, I cried, and I laughed some more. Bravo

This book had me like this: 🥹😭 on repeat.

I initially read this on ebook when it first released, and absolutely LOVED relistening to it on audiobook.

Book 1 in this series sadly was not my fave, but I REALLY liked this one!

Neighbors to lovers is my fave underrated trope, and this was just so swoony & lovely and low angst, while still having tons of emotional depth. It was fantastic!

And you definitely don’t have to read book 1 first to read & enjoy this one.

I’m also very picky when it comes to kids in books, but overall Luca was written very well for a 6 going on 7 year old.

Absolutely loved it!

If book one was good, this one was PHENOMENAL. Different, sure, but better.

Ben and Jeremiah are... Gosh, how do I describe them? I don't want to say made for each other necessarily, even though they are, but... Liz was made for Ben too, you know? I think these 3 will always be connected in a way that is out of this world. Jeremiah is not a replacement for Liz, and Liz was not more important than him or vice versa... I think Ben Stirling has two soulmates, and those two are Liz and Jelly.

I first tried to read this book a long time ago, but when it started with Ben writing letters to his dead wife I knew it was not the right time, and I am glad I waited. Now was the best time for me to read this book and what the helly, what a time I had.

I loved witnessing Ben and Jer falling in love, but what I loved the most was how they built their relationship from ground up in the most honest way possible. I loved how Liz was still part of their story and how Jeremiah never felt threatened by her memory, he cherished it because she was and forever will be a part of their lives. I loved how Jelly loved Luca, how it was never a question on where he stands when it comes to Ben having a kid, how he embraced that without overstepping, but made a space for himself there that was just for him.

Luca is such an amazing kid and it was always fun to have him around. I know for some kids in books are a deal breaker, but Luca is exceptional and he adds so much dept to the story, and not only the story per se, but to the relationship that is growing between Jer and Ben.

This book, while it has a huge part that talks about grief, it also talked about hope, second chances, old love, new love, friendship, camaraderie... it was hot as well, but not in an exaggerated way, the spice was only there to highlight the progress these two made in their relationship, to build intimacy and connection. AND THIS BOOK WAS ALSO A LOT OF FUN. I laughed out loud so many times... Jelly is hilarious and funny without even trying. His inner monologs are comedy gold, and his interactions with Ben in the beginning are what bring Ben back to life... in a way. I think Jeremiah's presence gave Ben years back.

Liz will always have half of Ben's heart, and I love how the author didn't try to chance that, didn't try to erase her importance to the story or downplay how she was the person Ben loved with everything he had, BUT as I said, Jeremiah has his own place and his place is secure and just as important, he holds the other part of Ben's heart. Than you Jesse for not making it look like one wae more important than the other, for showing us that both were important and there would be no story without the other one in the picture.

Luca is a lucky kid to have (had) a mum like Liz AND Jelly in his life... Ben too.

As much as I laughed reading this book, I cried just as much reading Ben's final letter to his dead wife, and the exhibition game part. Those two moments were so emotional... in a way I was not expecting.

Besides "Unbreak me" I always felt like there was something missing from Jesse's books, something that I can't put my finger on, but just like "Unbreak me", "The Legend Next Door" is PERFECTION. Nothing is missing, nothing is too much, nothing is lacking. I think Jesse's specialty are books with a lot of soul in them, spicy but not overly so. She writes emotions with her whole heart and I think that's why "Unbreak me" and "The Legend Next Door" hit differently for me. These books have soul.

As a side note, I love how we got to see more of Robbie and Ant, I missed them ( also, I need to know what they did when Ben and Jelly kissed for the first time on the porch... they were spying again, weren't they? 😂). I am also excited to see more about Sev and T, it is fun how Jesse introduces us to the next character in each book.

Now... I was not ready to let Jelly and Ben go, I'm still not, but... I am glad I got to read this book, I really am, but what makes me happier is that I realized when the best time was and waited because I got to experience this story and be consumed by it. 10 stars. 10 stars and I'm coming back. That's a promise.

10 stars are not enough
