Summary

Incorrectly signing her name in the marriage registry leads Valeria Woodville to discover further disturbing information about her husband, Eustace Macallan. Each revelation leads to further questions as Valeria’s journey prompts her to defy him, taking the law into her own hands as she endeavours to navigate her way through a series of false clues and obstructions.

Published in 1875, The Law and the Lady is one of Collins’s later novels and is a remarkable early illustration of a female investigator as a main character. In the course of its narrative it questions Victorian society’s perspectives of both law and lady.

A Wonderful Story

I'm going to start by saying the voice of Lucy Scott was beautiful reading this book by Wilkie Collins. She was perfect for the voice of Valeria. Lovely tones and very relaxing to listen to. The Law and The Lady was a very well written and clever story by Wilkie Collins. It is my third book by this author, I've also read The Woman In White, excellent! and No Name, brilliant! This is a shorter novel but still very good! I definitely recommend!

Engaging plot and wonderful narrator

At times too slow but I loved the strong and determined heroine and the cast of her supporters, highlight was the description of the original trial
