About this listen

If you give this book a one-star review, you might end up dead.

Emma is house-sitting on the rainy Washington coast with only her golden retriever for company. She likes the isolation, the peace and quiet, and the opportunity to read.

But her latest pick, a poorly written and gruesome horror novel, is disappointing and Emma leaves a one-star review. A message dings back - the author, H.G. Kane, has replied and he's furious. Emma brushes it off, until disturbing incidents start to occur. Scratches in the night. A figure crawling around in the shadows.

Kane has written sixteen other novels, all similarly sadistic tales of stalking and murder. He knows he's a brilliant writer - he just needs to make Emma understand...

Expect the unexpected in this pulse-pounding novel of psychological suspense and terror from the critically acclaimed author of the TikTok sensation No Exit.

Brilliant and tense storyline. Best book I've listened to in ages. I'm now going to buy the book to read as I found it fascinating to listen to. so many books don't have in depth characters. This book does. Highly recommend

Tense, clever, good strong characters

I really felt connected to Emma. I also liked the other characters and I thought the story was good, not great.

Excellent narrator

This is a cool concept for a thriller! I loved all of the twists and turns and the multiple POV’s. Emma was inspiring and brave but some of her decisions were frustrating at times! The book read like a movie and had me on the edge of my seat for most of the time,

Lots of twists

Was a very different prospective, with many twists turns and surprises. Loved this book from start to finish. Wouldn't dare give it a one star rating. Lol

At first I really struggled to get through this book, but that was mostly because I usually read in bed before going to sleep and I just couldn’t read this before sleeping, it scared me too much!!!
So safe to say I really enjoyed the first part of the book. However like most other reviewers I found the cat and mouse chase in the house went on for too long. Literal hours in the audiobook are spent on it and eventually I found it too dull to be scary and got through the book faster, eventually I even got so bored I increased the speed to x2 just to finish the book.
I felt the book ended well too. There was some twists which were predictable but well written none the less and glad everything was closed up with a nice tidy bow. And the phrase “I’ll meet you there” will never sound the same to me again. It will catch my heart string from now on.
I think the only other thing I disliked was the animal cruelty, real and potential. At one point in the book I was ready to stop the audiobook and delete it from my library. So if you are a massive animal lover and don’t like the idea of harm coming to your pets take this as a trigger warning. I guess it’s a compliment for the writing that I got such a strong reaction but for me it pulled me out of the story and with audiobooks I couldn’t just scan ahead to make sure everything turned out well. If I couldn’t have maybe I would have enjoyed the book a little more.
So overall it gets a 3 from me. It wasn’t bad, wasn’t great. I’m glad I read it but I’ll never read it again.

It has great moments and bad moments
