About this listen
If you give this book a one-star review, you might end up dead.
Emma is house-sitting on the rainy Washington coast with only her golden retriever for company. She likes the isolation, the peace and quiet, and the opportunity to read.
But her latest pick, a poorly written and gruesome horror novel, is disappointing and Emma leaves a one-star review. A message dings back - the author, H.G. Kane, has replied and he's furious. Emma brushes it off, until disturbing incidents start to occur. Scratches in the night. A figure crawling around in the shadows.
Kane has written sixteen other novels, all similarly sadistic tales of stalking and murder. He knows he's a brilliant writer - he just needs to make Emma understand...
Expect the unexpected in this pulse-pounding novel of psychological suspense and terror from the critically acclaimed author of the TikTok sensation No Exit.

So safe to say I really enjoyed the first part of the book. However like most other reviewers I found the cat and mouse chase in the house went on for too long. Literal hours in the audiobook are spent on it and eventually I found it too dull to be scary and got through the book faster, eventually I even got so bored I increased the speed to x2 just to finish the book.
I felt the book ended well too. There was some twists which were predictable but well written none the less and glad everything was closed up with a nice tidy bow. And the phrase “I’ll meet you there” will never sound the same to me again. It will catch my heart string from now on.
I think the only other thing I disliked was the animal cruelty, real and potential. At one point in the book I was ready to stop the audiobook and delete it from my library. So if you are a massive animal lover and don’t like the idea of harm coming to your pets take this as a trigger warning. I guess it’s a compliment for the writing that I got such a strong reaction but for me it pulled me out of the story and with audiobooks I couldn’t just scan ahead to make sure everything turned out well. If I couldn’t have maybe I would have enjoyed the book a little more.
So overall it gets a 3 from me. It wasn’t bad, wasn’t great. I’m glad I read it but I’ll never read it again.
It has great moments and bad moments
