About this listen

Adamine Bustamante is born in Jamaica, inside one of the island’s last leper colonies. When she goes to a Revivalist Church, she discovers her gift of warning. But no one has bothered to warn Adamine that when she migrates to England her prophecies of hurricanes and earthquakes will no longer be respected. People will think she is crazy and lock her away in a mental hospital. Now, an old woman, Adamine wants to tell her own story but she must compete with Mr. Writer Man, the novelist who is twisting her words for his own book, and Adamine doesn’t know why. In a story about magic and migration, about stories and story-telling, we discover it is never one person who owns a story, or who has the right to tell it.

The narrators accent and delivery for each of the characters was so entrancing, I really got lost in the world. I love the threads it chose to follow and the ones it left to flutter in the breeze. Really felt like a much needed escape for me so I’m very grateful to have come across it.

A story that made in questioned spirituality and religion. The narrators voice and accent was wonderful and drew me into the story. The story was power, sad and complex at times. I wanted more at the end. I really enjoyed.

Spiritual

I am a big fan of Kei Miller's work and loved 'reading' the novel, which is an important one for several different reasons. Whilst it was a great treat to hear the book being read in the melodious tones of its author, unfortunately, the overall experience was ruined by my discovery that - despite verifying before purchase that I was getting the UNABRIDGED version - the plot was unceremoniously ended roughly halfway through its execution. Audible/Amazon/the publishers need to resolve this issue promptly, if they are to restore my confidence in making future purchases of supposedly unabridged titles. How can we be confident that we are getting the full book if we can't depend on the provided description of it being unabridged? This was particularly problematic here, since so much of the message, plot dynamics and poignancy of the book, including the entirety of Adamine's experience in England, appears in the parts that are missing from this audio version. Disappointing.

WONDERFUL STORY RUINED BY INCOMPLETE EXECUTION!

The audiobook leaves 40% of the story out ! I am very disappointed by Audible really.
