Summary

The must-listen gothic thriller of 2021.

This is the story of a murderer. A stolen child. Revenge. This is the story of Ted, who lives with his daughter Lauren and his cat Olivia in an ordinary house at the end of an ordinary street.

All these things are true. And yet some of them are lies.

You think you know what's inside the last house on Needless Street. You think you've read this story before. In the dark forest at the end of Needless Street, something lies buried. But it's not what you think....

Gripping!

I have just finished listening to this dark, mysterious and exceptionally written gothic horror and am surprised at the pure visceral feelings it has left me with. No other horror has managed to have such an effect. A dark tale perfectly read by a very talented narrator, who made each character their very own. Sadness, enlightenment and a deeper understanding of the human mind are just a little of how I feel. I don't want to discuss the plot in this review, purely because I would not want to give a single thing away. I highly recommend The Last House on Needless Street.. Catriona Ward rocks as a writer and I can't wait to read what she comes up with next. I'm off to order the book, to read this time, so I can savour every word.

Awful

I wrote my review and deleted it before this version. My first draft went in quite a bit, funnily enough that being my main complaint about this book.

To summarise. Half of the story is in the POV of a kitty monologue. Yes a cat! The last few hours keep making you think that it's about to end, but doesn't.
Cut out the kitty chat and the never ending, ending and the story may have enough about it to keep the listener from frankly past caring about any of it anymore.

Creepy, horror, psychological thriller all words listed in reviews with an additional critc from Stephen King, can only make me think I must have got a different book from everyone else.

Dull, monotonous, padded, rambling and 10+ hrs of my life I will never get back AND I'm still listening with 44mins to go. Wow.

Thrilling to return to.

I didn’t guess. The hints were there and I should have picked them up! I loved the suspense and the darkness was truly spine tingling. The narrative was clever and sensitive. I think this is a unique novel.

5 star thriller, 1 star audiobook

I loved Catriona Ward's previous work, Little Eve. This is even better. An utterly gripping dark thriller that unwinds with wonderful complexity. Ward could well be the next Gillian Flynn (although for my money Ward is the better writer) . Such a shame the audiobook version was marred by such an irritating narrator. I gave up and ordered the book.

Avoid

I’m not one to give up on an audiobook I’ve purchased but I came really close with this one.
Working my way through it was like going on a 10 hour run…….I don’t enjoy it but I’ll be so pleased to get to the end.
I know others have really enjoyed it which is great but there are some of us out there who think it’s one of the worst books they’ve listened to in a long time……….a storyline that was rambling, uninteresting and just daft……..sorry, not my cup of tea at all.

Different

I imagine reading this book would be far better. Probably an excellent horror movie. But the jaunty delivery removes the dark elements and nuances of this clever story. Personally the big lead up was mind numbing at times but the unravelling at the end made it worth it. You do figure out to a degree what is happening as you listen.

Hard to describe but brilliant!

I really enjoyed this book, it had several interesting twists and turns - some I saw coming, some took me by surprise. The only reason I haven’t given 5 stars was that the mid section did drag frustratingly for a short time. But once the pace picked up again it was excellent. A really unique story that I thoroughly enjoyed.
