Summary

The must-listen gothic thriller of 2021.

This is the story of a murderer. A stolen child. Revenge. This is the story of Ted, who lives with his daughter, Lauren, and his cat, Olivia, in an ordinary house at the end of an ordinary street.

All these things are true. And yet some of them are lies.

You think you know what's inside the last house on Needless Street. You think you've come across this story before. In the dark forest at the end of Needless Street, something lies buried. But it's not what you think....

VERY WELL WRITTEN

I HAVE TRIED ! This is Gothic horror which I wouldn't normally choose but the great reviews of this book impelled me to read it. I so wanted to get through this book but to say it's hard going would be a huge understatement, The writing is fabulous. The narrator is superb and reads this book so perfectly. The book is PAINFULLY slow and the only thing that really kept me listening was the fabulous writing and the narrator. I have listened for hours and there are around 4.5 hours left but sadly I have had to give up.
I don't feel intrigued or curious to what comes next in the book, in fact I have lost all interest in this story. I feel as if I have let myself down really but I have to be honest and I cannot take any more of hearing the same kind of dialogue from Olivia and Lauren and our poor Ted. Trying very hard not to give out any spoilers here btw.
This book is about a man with multiple personality disorder and it is a complex story which is difficult to follow. I feel would be great for a dramatisation/film but it certainly isn't working for me in book form. A few things have made me uncomfortable - nothing too scary or traumatising because after all, this is a book about someone with an insufferable psychological illness. I love the author's writing and may read something else of hers but this book is not worth me putting myself under pressure to finish.

Compelling, mystery, knowledge

Was a bit confused to begin with, then started to understand. So beautifully crafted and when you think you know...
Very interesting to understand DID, specially in audiobook versión makes it so real, like being on the head and thoughts and feelings of that person, or many persons...
Very worth the listen, very well researched and written

Good story to a point

good book but has a marmite twist is all I can say. Personally I still don't know what I think of the book overall. if it had of gone another way it could have been better.

Worth sticking with

I picked this up due to rave reviews. About a third of the way in, I felt it was slow and struggled to get into it. I found myself wondering what the hype was about. I stuck with it as I didnt have any credits left.

I figured out the big twist a few chapters before the reveal and thought the book was done at that point... I was wrong. After the reveal it got a lot more fast paced and I found myself not able to put it away. The story was very well written and i am SO SO glad i stuck with it, I am so glad I chose this book to spend my credit on, and I feel bad for those who gave up.

Dont give up, it picks up just before half way and the last third of the book you do not want to miss!!

Finished in a day and no regrets about it

my god, this book is incredible! so many layers, so many intelligent little moments. I'm glad I binged it, because noticing how the tiniest details all came together was mind blowing.
I can't wait until this is inevitably made into a film.

Excellent, mind-bending listen

This is a superbly written, deeply intriguing, disturbing, original and richly complex book that challenges the reader at every turn, shaping and reshaping my conceptions the more I read. With multiple narrative perspectives, the story is told in a unique way that may take some time getting used to, but for me it was worth persevering with because the unravelling of this turned out to be so interesting! This was a stand out book read by a great narrator. Would definitely recommend.

Highly Recommend Reading!

Loved this story. Sadness, fear, disgust, pity. No doubt Catriona Ward is causing a right brouhaha in the world of books! Then I found out she wrote this on Dartmoor, just up the road, so even more smiles from me!

clever and well performed

A difficult listen, the story is very cleverly constructed and the narrator really helped me keep track of characters but this one just wasn't for me. Couldn't get into it. I am very much in the minority as I have seen it loved and admired by many. perhaps my cat phobia played some part in my enjoyment?
