About this listen

The must-listen gothic thriller of 2021.

This is the story of a murderer. A stolen child. Revenge. This is the story of Ted, who lives with his daughter, Lauren, and his cat, Olivia, in an ordinary house at the end of an ordinary street.

All these things are true. And yet some of them are lies.

You think you know what's inside the last house on Needless Street. You think you've come across this story before. In the dark forest at the end of Needless Street, something lies buried. But it's not what you think....

I HAVE TRIED ! This is Gothic horror which I wouldn't normally choose but the great reviews of this book impelled me to read it. I so wanted to get through this book but to say it's hard going would be a huge understatement, The writing is fabulous. The narrator is superb and reads this book so perfectly. The book is PAINFULLY slow and the only thing that really kept me listening was the fabulous writing and the narrator. I have listened for hours and there are around 4.5 hours left but sadly I have had to give up.
I don't feel intrigued or curious to what comes next in the book, in fact I have lost all interest in this story. I feel as if I have let myself down really but I have to be honest and I cannot take any more of hearing the same kind of dialogue from Olivia and Lauren and our poor Ted. Trying very hard not to give out any spoilers here btw.
This book is about a man with multiple personality disorder and it is a complex story which is difficult to follow. I feel would be great for a dramatisation/film but it certainly isn't working for me in book form. A few things have made me uncomfortable - nothing too scary or traumatising because after all, this is a book about someone with an insufferable psychological illness. I love the author's writing and may read something else of hers but this book is not worth me putting myself under pressure to finish.

VERY WELL WRITTEN

Did not see the plot twist .. really well written and the narrator is incredibly adept at inhabiting the different characters.

So good!

Really was gripped by this story, very well told, with huge compassion for the subject.

Fascinating, intensely sad and hopeful

I’ve tried a couple of times now to get into this novel as I know it’s got a huge amount of good reviews but I’m finding it so slow. I’m not engaging with any of the characters and I think I’ve worked out some of the twists I.e what’s happened to Lulu. It’s always a bad sign when I find the book I’m listening to a chore and that’s what’s happening…even Olivia’s not holding my attention.

It’s being well narrated though.

Sadly not for me

Loved this story. Sadness, fear, disgust, pity. No doubt Catriona Ward is causing a right brouhaha in the world of books! Then I found out she wrote this on Dartmoor, just up the road, so even more smiles from me!

Highly Recommend Reading!
