Summary
The first new series from #1 bestseller Mark Billingham in 20 years.
Meet Detective Miller: unique, unconventional, and criminally underestimated...
He's a detective, a dancer, he has no respect whatsoever for authority - and he's the best hope Blackpool has for keeping criminals off the streets. Meet Detective Declan Miller.
A double murder in a seaside hotel sees grieving Miller return to work to solve what appears to be a case of mistaken identity. Just why were two completely unconnected men taken out?
With a distinctly loose relationship with reality and a new partner to deal with, can eccentric, offbeat Miller find answers where more traditional police have found only an impossible puzzle?
Critic reviews
"A real contender for the nation's top crime writer." (Daily Mail)
"Mark Billingham gets better and better." (Michael Connelly)
"A literary superstar." (Mail on Sunday)

A great surprise!
I’d read Mark’s other stuff but found it a bit grim and procedural ( that’s my problem, not his writing). When I saw this was more of a who dunnit with humour I was keen to read and not disappointed. It was excellent- plot was great and Miller was a solid likeable character. I only wish we’d got a prequel with his wife in it. Can’t wait for next book.

Hooked!
Was a bit of a slow one to get into but that was more me than the story. Then I caught myself laughing out loud whilst walking the dog and knew I was hooked on Dec! Was disappointed when book was finished (as was enjoying so much) but looking forward to next instalment.

Very enjoyable read
This is the first book that I have listened to from Mark B. And I loved it. I laughed out loud in places, whilst I was very moved in others.
I thought that it was excellently read. I look forward to the next in the series.

New Favourite Detective
Have always loved the Tom Thorne novels, and the majority of the standalone books, but in Declan Miller I may just have found the best Billingham creation yet.
Combining his writing skills with his stand up abilities in Declan Miller he has come up with a great detective with an interesting back story and some real comics touches.
The Blackpool setting could not be more removed from Thorne’s London haunts and in David Threlfall’s excellent narration Miller’s world and characters spring to life
Delighted to hear that Tom will soon return but pleased that Miller now looks to be a series of real contrast.
Long may they both continue!

A joy from start to finish
Loving Detective Miller! He has inherited Mark Billingham's tongue-in-cheek/razor-sharp wit and verbal dexterity and is a joy to accompany through the story. The actual denouement was probably the weakest part of the book, but as a vehicle to get this great listen on the road and keep it trucking along at a delicious pace, it could easily be forgiven for being less than convincing. Beautifully read, too. I was nervous when I realised it wasn't Billingham reading it himself but, as the location had changed to the North West, and the book & Miller needed their own distinctive voice, the choice of David Threlfall was perfect. Can't wait for the next one!
