Summary

Tara, Katherine and Fintan have been best friends since they were teenagers. Now in their early thirties, they've been living it up in London for 10 years. But what have they to show for a decade of hedonism? Sure, Tara's got a boyfriend - but only because she's terrified of spending five minutes alone. Katherine, on the other hand, has a neatness fetish that won't let anyone too close to mess up her life. And Fintan? Well, he has everything. Until he learns that without your health, you've got nothing....

All three are drinking in the last chance saloon and they're about to discover that if you don't change your life, life has a way of changing you....

Appalling narration

Love the storyline and the characters but unfortunately I must agree with others this was appalling try of imitating Irish accent. It really sounded 'oirish'. Really sad as I love MK books and this one would be a definitely come back but I guess I will rather read than listen.

The Last Chance Saloon

I have been reluctant to purchase this audio book but am immensely grateful that I have eventually done so. The well chosen narrator brings the story alive. This novel, like all of Marian Keyes others ,is fantastic. It's full of realistic characters, so well developed that I find myself wondering what they will do next as if the story carries on some where beyond the fictional realm of this great book. Well worth the listen/read.

Worst accents ever!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator! She simply can't do accents.

What other book might you compare The Last Chance Saloon to, and why?

Rachel's Holiday by the same author. Fun, easy to listen to.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She simply can't do any accent apart from English. Initially I thought she was doing a weird Irish dialect, but that's not the case. Irish men and women sound identically awful. The male Italian character sounds asian half the time and never Italian! The poor Swedish girl sounds like no nationality. I won't buy Sushi For Beginners because the same woman is narrating it.

Any additional comments?

Great, fun, should be easy to listen to utterly ruined by narrator.

Five stars for book, only one for the narration

Sorely disappointed in the 'oirish' narration (where required) really grated on me making it difficult to get caught up in the story as i had in reading the book. Dreadful Irish accent i'm sorry to say has meant i have abandoned listening and unearthed the novel after many years!! Seemed to get worse as the book went on, really annoying....sorry to go on about it but it really has spoiled it for me. The book itself is a great wee read and well worth investing in.

Good book ruined by the narrator.

I love Marian Keyes books and this one is no exception, but the narrator has a really bad Irish accent. Not quite nails down a black board, but certainly irritating. It did distract from the story slightly, but not enough for me to stop listening. The book it's self and the story is good and over all I did enjoy it, but I can't help feeling it would have been 5* review if it had been read by an Irish narrator.
Persevere if you like Marian Keyes books, it is worth it in the end.

Narration ruins this

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Narration is horrendous, this is one of my favourite Marian Keyes books, I had forgotten about it until I saw it as a title in a recent BOGOF promo on Audible, now I know why it was free.

What did you like best about this story?

Great story

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Juanita McMahon?

Anyone, it would have done fine with any natural accent, it was the appalling attempt at an Irish accent that killed it.

Was The Last Chance Saloon worth the listening time?

Not in this incarnation

Last Chance Saloon: Brilliant

I've read most of Marian Keys work and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, in the summer of 2004, I borrowed Last Chance Saloon from my local library and oh my goodness what a read? This book is hillarious, very sad and somewhat erie in it's narrating. It's excellent - and I can't wait to own it off audible.com. A great read for those of you who like chick lit, and if you're feeling down today, this hillarious, yet poignant work will put everything into perspective for you. I can't wait till 1 March when I can get this title of audible. Lesley in Swansea UK

Great book, shame about the narrator

I would give the book itself 4 or 5 stars, but unfortunately this narrator really lets it down. I bought this book after listening to This Charming Man, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and was superbly narrated by someone who was either Irish, or did a great Irish accent - the accents in this book were hopelessly distracting at best, and intensely irritating at worst. I didn't finish this book until a few months after buying it, when I was desperate and had nothing else - thankfully the story is good, but my advice would be to buy it as a book, or download one of Marian's other books, as all the other narrators are fabulous!

Funny, classic Marian Keyes

Great story, classic Marian Keyes style. It's a pity the narration was slightly off-putting - especially the absolutely shocking Irish accents!!
