About this listen

There are plots to invade England and Normandy. There are assassination attempts and the only man who can stop all of these is the Earl of Cleveland. Moving from Scotland to Normandy and back again this is a fast moving novel set in the months before the civil war in England and Normandy begins.

I returned to the series after a break and almost gave up as the narration sounded comical (think Flashheart of Blackadder) but the story eventually won me over. The author (like many who write series) does tend to repeat homs lf which probably isn't noticeable when you read the books as they come out but when binging a series, the repeated references to how archers train, practise, stretch etc or how Knights work etc can be a bit grinding. All that being said, it is an engaging story and I have already purchased the next 4 books.

A narrator that takes getting used to and an author that repeats himself (often)

advancing the story of Henry 1st champion, fights against Scots, Norman's, French, the holy roman empire, and rebel English, the king has enemies everywhere and an heir only a toddler. the child's mother matilda is also in danger, and our hero splits time between Normandy and the NE of England.
Great tale of war and intrigue, researched well with a cast of varied characters, describing every day life and battles intricately.
malk Williams gives another masterly performance, can't wait for book 8 as civil war between matilda and Stephen is about to flare.

Outstanding book based on historical fact but wrapped in fictional intrigue. On to the next saga with relish.
