Great listen
Disclaimer: This audiobook was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review. I have enjoyed this book greatly. The writing style is quite different, and it had me hooked. It has a bit of a push and pull feeling. Sometimes you are pulled into the story, standing right beside the character as she experiences the things around her, and other times you are just floating above all, passively observing the character. It is interesting, but might not be everyone's type of book. The pacing is just right, and I love the daughter very much, she is so lovely. The narration by Ann Sprinkle was excellent, she was able to channel the character's emotions through so strongly. The breaking of character's voices in their speeches and the broken hearted calmness as they try to ease each other's worries were really well done and brought the listening experience to another level.

Highly Unrealistic

This book is like a "Disney version" of a woman escaping domestic violence with of course a happy ending. It is totally unrealistic and sometimes laughable at just how 'easy' the process was for Katy. It gives the wrong impression about how "real domestic violence" occurs and the lengths women must go through to get away from there abusers and live as safely as they can. If someone IRL was able to escape their abuser in the way Katy did, they would be 'extremely lucky', especially with all the financial resources they had at their disposal.
The author inserted elements of spiritualism in the book which I am assuming was her attempt to uplift women going through domestic violence however, it came across as disjointed. I was frustrated & exasperated at how clueless Katy was & how she responded & advised her daughter after the room invasion. Lots of things she did just didn't make sense such as, why she constantly asked people to draw her maps everywhere she went? She had access to the internet via her burner phone, hotels & the various other places that have internet. Why did she service & repaint her car instead of just buying a new one straight away, Chuck could have had access to police records allowing him to easily trace her car. She didn't use the internet to research how to disappear either, her friend ended up telling her common sense information she could have easily found out for herself. Most women in the same situation would have researched this stuff long before they left because often their lives depend on it, but Katy didn't bother, even though she had plenty of time away from her abuser to plan.
I'm sure the book was written with good intentions but I can't help but think the author should have researched the subject matter more and made it realistic, I would hate to think this Disney version is what some people actually believe happens in most domestic violence cases IRL, it's not.
