Summary

Lori Barnes promised herself that she would never do to her son what her mother had done to her. Part of that was keeping him from his father. But she is forced to flee from her ex-husband, and takes 10-year old Bill with her to a place that she remembers as peaceful, her great aunt's cottage in Michigan where they are surrounded by wealthy people. She becomes the school janitor so that her son doesn't have to be a latch-key child.

She is suddenly faced with her son's choice to visit his father in Arizona and the long-term implication that Bill could want to live with him. Is she prepared to let Bill go? Has she rooted him enough in principles for him to find his own happiness? And will the happiness she has found in Michigan sustain her?
