What begins as tricks and pranks escalate to attacks and death, while the figure of the Dog—the jackal-headed god Anubis, ruler of death—casts a long shadow over the desert sands. Destruction follows in his wake as he returns to reclaim his place in Abydos. Can Rafe and Ned stand against both the god and House plots when the life of Ned’s son is on the line?

Not a sagging middle
I snapped up this book right away because I was such a fan of the first one. Rafe is, in one word, a hoot. Oh, he’s very serious – about his coffee house, about the mafioso-like family he was born into and is expected to remain loyal to, and about his lover, Ned. In other words, Rafe’s got a lot going on. He wants to pay off his debts so he can discharge his obligations to his house. Oh, and his cousin’s a bit of a twat, so getting away from all the drama’d be a good thing.
Then, unexpectedly, he’s offered the opportunity of a lifetime. Not just to fly again (he was a pilot but injured his eyes and never thought he would be able to fly again), but to accompany his lover to Aegypt. Sounds simple enough, but there’s an assassination attempt and there are ever-escalating problems with the dig. Someone is disrupting the people around Rafe and Ned. Sometimes cruelly. When those events almost lead to death, things come to a head. Then Ned’s son disappears and all hell breaks loose. But Rafe will do whatever it takes to bring the boy home safely. I just worried if he’d succeed or be too late.
This is an action-packed plot with lots of stuff going on. Through it all is Rafe’s strong narrative voice – a little (okay a lot) sarcastic. Witty. Never dull. The strength of these books lies not just with the writing, but with the superb characterizations.
And, to be clear, Gary Furlong’s narration adds a whole other layer of superiority. Just fantastic. I’m hopeful the third book comes soon because I can’t wait to see where this steampunk series goes next.

Loved it… can feel a book hangover coming on!
I really enjoyed this book, really good story, plenty of action, just enough steam and a continuation of the romance. Some plot lines were a bit obvious, but they didn’t detract from my enjoyment, excellent narration - can’t wait for book 3

No Shaggy Dog Story
The sublime narration elevates this tale to enjoyable perfection. So well written, tender, good banter, passion all sealed inside an adventure to Egypt. Ms Butler's characterization of the MCs allows us to fully enjoy the development of the relationship, the deepening of the love and respect, all whilst exposing us to more of the "steampunk" world.
Can't wait for Book 3.

PS I've spent extended time at Abydos where indeed there is the massive wall showing the famed, marvelous and extensive King List. (This list is disputed by "Egyptologists" as it would require extensive rewriting of their own theories if the dates are true). The Temple does have the strange images on a high lintel near the entry of the "flying machines/tanks/ekronoplans" (again disputed, but seeing it first hand must cause questions to a logical mind). At Giza to the right of the Sphinx (as it faces you) is a small New Kingdom Sphinx Temple; built where the builders had no idea of the older structures beneath. This is similar (IMO) to the actual Osirion. A perfectly crafted structure of sublimely cut granite (brought from Aswan), without any heiroglyphs save an incised flower of life midway up the granite block wall opposite where the stairs descend into the usually flooded temple base. This temple seemingly was lost in time, is at the rear of the Abydos Temple and so deep in the ground you can only wonder at it's vintage and meaning. Did the builders of the front temple even know about it? I was there during the 2011 Revolution so had the temple all to myself for several hours. In fact I was stuck in Egypt till June so had all the temples more or less to myself.

The combination is perfect.
The combination of author and narrator is, in this instance, sublime. A perfect pairing like Gorgonzola and pear!
