But amongst her middle-class colleagues, Peggy must keep the truth about her past secret at all times. If the realities of her life in Belfast are revealed, she could lose everything she has worked for.

And when she meets a well-to-do doctor down in Dublin, she must make a decision: should she protect her family and her history? Or can she let herself fall in love?

Critic reviews

What a fascinating slice of social history. Seana Tinley has written a beautiful, lyrical love letter to handywomen and midwives through the ages. At a time when childbirth has become so institutionalised, this beautiful book reminds us of the instinctive care, skill, empathy and wisdom that women have at their fingertips. All generations will love this book. I adored it

Loved it all. A gentle, easy read, with a good story line and factual references. The author shows a real understanding of the true art of midwifery. I enjoyed the references to Irish politics, without it taking over the book. As a midwife of 35 years, I loved this book.

True understanding of real midwifery

The topic itself is interesting, but the book moves painfully slowly. It spends a lot of time circling the same ideas without really adding much, which makes it hard to stay engaged. Instead of feeling thoughtful, the pacing starts to feel tedious, and finishing the book becomes more of a chore than a pleasure.

Repetitive and slow
