We live under an ideology that preys on every aspect of our lives: our education and our jobs; our healthcare and our leisure; our relationships and our mental wellbeing; even the planet we inhabit – the very air we breathe. So pervasive has it become that, for most people, it has no name. It seems unavoidable, like a natural law.

But trace it back to its roots, and we discover that it is neither inevitable nor immutable. It was conceived, propagated, and then concealed by the powerful few. It is time to bring it into the light - and, in doing so, to find an alternative worth fighting for.

Neoliberalism. Do you know what it is?

Explosive and beautifully told … these truths can set us free (Danny Dorling)
This brave book borders on being a page turner … ‘The Secret History of Neoliberalism’ is really the ultimate crime novel, one in which we all play a part (Kevin Anderson)
Incisive, illuminating, eye-opening—an unsparing anatomy of the great ideological beast stalking our times (David Wallace-Wells)
The Invisible Doctrine is everything you need. Monbiot and Hutchinson have written the definitive short history of the neoliberal confidence trick (Yanis Varoufakis)
Mrs Thatcher was wrong: there is an alternative. Read this book and rebel (Guy Shrubsole)
Read it, get angry, demand better! (Gaia Vince)
Vital, vivid, compelling. Essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how dark money and hidden influence have taken over politics - and the world (Peter Geoghegan)
An urgent unmasking of some of the most powerful and insidious yet overlooked ideas of our era (Olúfemi O. Táíwò)
This book is dynamite – shining a spotlight on the evils of neoliberalism, shattering the myth that ‘there is no alternative’, and laying the foundations for a new politics (Caroline Lucas)
This is the book we have been waiting for. Read it, discuss it with your friends, and join the resistance! (Ingrid Robeyns)

Brilliantly concise, accessible and sensible. Well-structured, coherently argued, this book is a tiny glimpse not only into the shadowy world of the ultra-rich, but also into the potential alternative future which is waiting when we finally realise that they are pulling all the levers of power. Should be required reading before entering a voting booth!

An outstandingly clear and entirely necessary book

Most people have no idea of the control behind the systems that create our reality, knowledge is power and we need to enlighten ourselves! Thank you , George Monbiot, for educating me 🙏

Assuming you are not an oligarch, or one of their army of hired apologists, enforcers or court jesters, then listening to this book should make you intensely angry.

Angry about the way the world has been manipulated by forces of unbridled greed. Angry that a philosophy that is morally outrageous and a practical disaster for 99% of humanity, and the planet on which we depend, goes largely unchallenged, and angry that plutocrats and would-be autocrats brazenly parade themselves as righteous champions of the people, while their hands are firmly in the till.

This book does a masterful job of explaining how we got to where we are, unpicks the carefully-crafted web of deceit that keeps this movement at-once pervasive, and yet invisible, and proposes what the alternative could look like. I could scarcely recommend it more highly.

A tour de force, very accessible

Pulls the curtain back on neo liberalism. The golden rule, those with the gold make the rules (or get others to do it for them).

Brilliant but depressing

This is a tour around how a rich elite have secretly and systematically undermined democracy. It finishes with a suggestion of a new direction where we work together towards a better future, but warns that the secretive elite will do everything they can to stop us. Well worth a listen.

Insightful and thought provoking
