Summary
Eva, only 10, has known a hard life. Her mother, Mary, had an illicit relationship with the son of a wealthy merchant and found herself pregnant and alone, Eva's father wanting nothing to do with them. Mary married a cruel man, who never let Mary forget that Eva wasn't his daughter.
