Story
"I'll tell you something, something important. Love is a decision. Not a feeling. That's what you young people don't realise. That's why you're always off divorcing each other. No offence, dear." So decrees the formidable Connie Thrum of Scribbly Gum Island. She is the chief decision-maker of a rather unconventional family and her word is law. It's been over seventy years since Connie and her sister Rose visited their neighbours and found the kettle boiling and a baby waking for her feed, but no sign of her parents.

Story
From the outside, the Delaneys appear to be an enviably contented family. Even after all these years, former tennis coaches Joy and Stan are still winning tournaments, and now that they've sold the family business they have all the time in the world to learn how to 'relax'. Their four adult children are busy living their own lives, and while it could be argued they never quite achieved their destinies, no-one ever says that out loud.

Story
Pirriwee Public is a beautiful little beachside primary school where children are taught that ‘sharing is caring.’ So how has the annual School Trivia Night ended in full-blown riot? Sirens are wailing. People are screaming. The principal is mortified. And one parent is dead. Was it a murder, a tragic accident or just good parents gone bad? As the parents at Pirriwee Public are about to discover, sometimes it’s the little lies that turn out to be the most lethal.

Story
What if they hadn't gone? That's the question Clementine can't stop asking herself. It was just a backyard barbeque. They didn't know their hosts that well. They were friends of friends. They could so easily have said no. But she and her husband, Sam, said yes, and now they can never change what they did and didn't do that beautiful winter's day. Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One yapping dog. It's a normal weekend in the suburbs. What could possibly go wrong?

Their raucous, champagne-soaked birthday dinner has come to an abrupt end following a violent argument and an emergency dash to the hospital. So who started it this time? Was it angry, hurt Cat, still recovering from the 'night of the spaghetti'? Was it Lyn, so serenely successful, at least on the outside? Or was it quirky, dreamy Gemma, the sister who can't keep a secret except for the most important one of all?

Summary
"To be opened in the event of my death." With one swift, vicious movement, she sliced the envelope open, and pulled out a handwritten letter. "Love you and the girls...so sorry to leave you with this...cannot bear...."
The Husband's Secret is a funny, heartbreaking novel of marriage, grief, love, and secrets. When her husband announces he's in love with her best friend, painfully shy Tess picks up her young son and returns to her mother's house. There she begins an unexpected affair with an old flame.
Rachel is a woman in her 60s consumed by grief and anger at the loss of her daughter 20 years earlier. When her son announces he is taking her beloved grandson overseas, Rachel begins a descent into deeper bitterness and pain.
Cecilia is the quintessential "I don't know how she does it" woman. A devoted mother to three daughters, she runs her household like clockwork, is President of the P&C, owns an extremely successful Tupperware business and is happy in her 15-year marriage. Until she discovers a letter in their attic labeled: "To my wife Cecilia, to be opened in the event of my death".
Her husband's secret is a bombshell beyond all imagining with repercussions across the lives of all three women.

Really good!
This was a really good listen! I couldn't put it down. Not your typical story. I found the humour and observations of human behaviour wonderful. The story speeds along and it kept me I curious about what was going to happen next. The narration was very good and suited the book. Overall a very good listen which I would recommend.

So disappointed
Stopped listening after 1st chapter. It’s just a rambling string of stereotypes and extremely irritating to listen to.
I just didn’t care enough about the main character (actually totally disliked) and was so very disappointed by how the writing comes across.
The Aussie readers voice really grates and made the characters feel contrived, fake and one dimensional. Maybe better if read?
Shame as I am currently reading (not listening) to Nine Perfect Strangers and am really loving that for exactly all the opposite reasons...
Just for context; I am a middle aged English man.. (sorry) so not the target audience ..and I am probably the enemy... but am loving “Strangers”.

A realistic greatly told story about Karma!!
Where does The Husband's Secret rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I rank this book as one of my top, best reads!!
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Husband's Secret?
The revealing dialogue between Cecillia, Rachel and John Paul at the children's hospital.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
The tooth-brushing scene with Cecilia and John Paul.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I felt a deep sense of empathy for the main characters, realising how difficult it was for everyone to live with their own personal guilt. But for Cecilia, I had admiration throughout!
Any additional comments?
It was a well written book and the narration excellent with appropriate voices and tones. I love the connection to the Greek myth of Pandora and how the story encapsulated the unpredictability of life, the realities of facing our consequences. The story accurately reflected the realities of life and particularly, how the past affects our futures and how in many ways, we face the consequences of our actions.

Wonderful story telling
What made the experience of listening to The Husband's Secret the most enjoyable?
The Husband's Secret is a wonderful balance of humour, tragedy, regret and consequences. The characters are all likable and the reader/listener is keen to find out what will become of their lives.
What other book might you compare The Husband's Secret to and why?
It would be a disservice to this great read to compare it to another novel.
Have you listened to any of Caroline Lee’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not heard Caroline Lee perform before but I am certainly keen to hear her again. Her reading of this novel and her characterisations were faultless. She is superb.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me both laugh and cry. Any novel that can evoke emotion is well written and the characters in The Husband's Secret are all believable. Any of them could be one of my friends and I finished the book wanting only the best for each of them.

The author weaves a intricate tale that makes the ordinary extraordinary and draws one into the lives of people who could be one’s neighbour, sister or friend. Yet despite the focus being on such people she creates an all absorbing, can’t put it down story leaving one sated yet eager for her next story. Brilliantly narrated.

Wow. Where to begin. Gripping storyline, thought provoking prose, snarky humour, and disturbingly relatable characters. I recognized a little of myself in each of the characters. The narrator is sublime. I can’t wait to download her other books.
