THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME. OR IS THERE?

After an 'incident' one wet Friday night where he is found walking naked through the streets of Cambridge, Professor Andrew Martin is not feeling quite himself. Food sickens him. Clothes confound him. Even his loving wife and teenage son are repulsive to him. He feels lost amongst an alien species and hates everyone on the planet. Everyone, that is, except Newton, and he's a dog.

Who is he really? And what could make someone change their mind about the human race . . . ?

Critic reviews

"Matt Haig's hilarious novel puts our species on the spot"
"A wonderfully funny, gripping and inventive novel. Like Kurt Vonnegut and Audrey Niffenegger, Haig uses the tropes of science fiction to explore and satirise concepts of free will, love, marriage, logic, immortality and mercy with elegance and poignancy"
"Great idea, great plot and superb comedy, especially from the alien's puzzled analyses of primitive human ways"
"Matt Haig is a supreme talent and a writer to cherish, and The Humans is undoubtedly his magnum opus"
"A novel with an enormous heart, infused with a sense of gratitude for everything that makes us who we are" (Charlotte Heathcote)
"Haig's unexpectedly raw tale of love, belonging, and peanut butter . . . Funny, clever and quite, quite lovely" (Sam Baker)
"Excellent . . . very human and touching indeed" (PATRICK NESS)
"

The Humans is tremendous; a kind of Curious Incident meets The Man Who Fell to Earth.
It's funny, touching and written in a highly appealing voice

" (JOANNE HARRIS)
"The Humans is a laugh-and-cry book. Troubling, thrilling, puzzling, believable and impossible. Matt Haig uses words like a tin-opener. We are the tin" (JEANETTE WINTERSON)
"A brilliant exploration of what it is to love, and to be human, The Humans is both heartwarming and hilarious, weird, and utterly wonderful. One of the best books I've read in a very long time" (S.J. WATSON)

Just excellent! Especially for those struggling with their faith in humanity. A much needed tale recognizing the ugliness and terrible things of humanity but then leading the reader/listener to find astounding beauty shining through the cracks of human fallibility and mortality.

Funny, sad, beautiful, uplifting

..... and I almost returned the book. But I'm glad I stuck with it, this is a really thought provoking story, which I will return to soon.

The start was a bit odd.....

I downloaded this book after finishing the Midnight Library so had high expectations for this book. It was humorous in parts but half way through I knew that this wasn’t really my cup of tea. I do however enjoy looking at life through Matt Haig’s perspective. If only more humans did.

Preferred The Midnight Library

Having read The Midnight Library and loved it I simply had to read another Matt Haig book. This was good but didn't quite live up to the earlier piece, would I recommend it....I'm not so sure I would.

A uniquely put together narrative

Feeling lost? Sad? Despondent? I discovered midnight library at such a sad point and it really helped me. This isn’t quite as good but still a great read/listen when you need a story that will help reaffirm you. How great that he can turn his own despair into something that really helps others.
