Summary

Someone is about to die....

Someone is about to lie....

At the intimate house-warming party for her glorious ‘grand design’, Kathleen confides in her best friend, Beth, that she is terrified of one of their close friends but daren’t reveal which one. The guests are a tight-knit group, but Kathleen is convinced one of them is dangerous.

The next day Kathleen’s body is found at the foot of a cliff, and Beth must face the sickening truth that she may have been killed by one of their trusted friends. With little help from the police, Beth’s decides to seek answers.

All the friends have secrets they are desperate to hide, but only one of them is ready to kill to keep theirs safe....

The House Party is set on the Isle of Wight - insular, claustrophobic and with nowhere to run. Mary Grand has written a heart-stopping novel of secrets, betrayal and desire, perfect for fans of Louise Candlish and Lucy Foley.

Mixed thoughts

Good story, lots of twists snd turns, but Beth was the most annoying character ever created! This did spoil the experience a little as she was unbelievable in her actions, and her friends accepting them !

A bit of a ramble

The storyline was quite absorbing but it did seem to go on and on, then round in circles without furthering the plot. I was tempted to give up at various stages because nothing new seemed to happen to develop the narrative. It was quite a relief to get to the end.

Great down to earth murder mystery

I don’t often read or listen to this type of book but I really enjoyed this one. The story was well written and the plot sensible and well paced. The reading/performance was outstanding.
Well worth a listen

Refreshingly different

I listen to a LOT of 'Who done it' novels, so to come across this one, written from an unusual perspective was very refreshing. It's not often you find something 'new' about a murder (or was it murder?) mystery, so I can heartily say, listen to this one.

Enjoyable listen

The thing that made this book good was the narration. I have downloaded another book from this author and narrator. Accents and voices all carried out with perfection.
The story is a little bit weak but still kept me listening. I did not guess the murder right to the end.
Well worth a listen.

Worth listening to.

Wasn't sure at first but after a couple of chapters got into it. I do recommend this book and beautifully narrated.

Brilliant

I loved it!!
I know Southampton and the Isle of Wight very well so it was quite a surprise to notice the book is based on the island. Something I found quite unique about this writer that I really enjoyed it she remind you who the suspects are, why they are suspects and what they have done. She does this regularly and I found it a great help as sometimes with mystery books you get confused with who the characters are especially if there are quite a few of them. The full way through this book I kept thinking I knew who the murderer was but I was very wrong every time up until the last 45 minutes of the book. The author is very clever with giving you small subtle clues that you think makes it obvious done it but I was wrong.

I have enjoyed the narrator in the past so this was one of the reasons why I picked the book.

I am now about to use another credit to buy the other book by this author

Brilliant

Fantastic listen, I’ve read the book too. Author Mary Grand lives on the Isle of Wight where I live too, it was great to have a tour around the island whilst trying to figure out who the was.
