Summary

From the hilltop he could see London, stretched towards the hills of Kent and Surrey. The sky was beginning to pale at the edges. The city itself looked numb as a rough sleeper; Camden and then the West End, the Square Mile. His watch was missing. He searched his pockets, found a bloodstained serviette and a promotional leaflet for a spiritual retreat, but no keys, phone or police badge.

Detective Nick Belsey needs help.

Something happened last night - something with the boss' wife - and Belsey needs to get out of London and away from the debt and the drink and the deceit.

Collecting his belongings back at Hampstead CID on what should be the last day of his career, Belsey sees a missing person's report. But this one's different; this is on The Bishop's Avenue, one of the most expensive streets in the city. Belsey sees a chance for a new life.

But someone else got there first.

"A twisting spiral of lies and corruption." (Val McDermid)

"[Belsey has] got to be London's coolest cop. Harris has plundered London's underworld for his richly plotted and unusual detective series. It's heady stuff." (Daily Mail

Fantastic, utterly gripping.. so clever!

One of the very best thrillers I have read/listened to. Utterly gripping. Brilliantly written. Taut, clever, suspenseful. Personalities believable. Story intricate and will keep you guessing to the end. Clearly very well researched.

Narrator Toby Longworth is superb. His range of tone, accent and character delivery is excellent. Even his female characters are completely plausible. So often great books are ruined by male narrators doing pastiche female voices.. not this actor.. he's believable.

Really want to get the other Oliver Harris books now!

Top-class thriller

This is a cracker - an outstanding crime thriller that grips from the start and never relents. It’s original too, with a central character - a London detective constable - whose chaotic life could crash around his ears at any moment. Surviving on his wits, trying to look as if he’s still functioning, he investigates a missing person - and that leads him into a world of huge money and bigger stings. A convincing grasp of police organization and trade craft lies behind the slick story-telling.
The reading is excellent too and fits well with the writing.

Confused by the positive reviews

I listen to lots (and I mean lots) of audible books, maybe on average two a week. And this is one of the very few I couldn't finish. Other reviews are very positive about it but I found it charmless and impossible to care what happened next. I battled with it for three days but then gave up. Not for me.

Not the author’s fault

Story is amazing. Narrator is appalling. Even is voice of the main character is like a child mimicking someone with Downs syndrome
