About this listen

RT Reviewers' Choice Award winner

She'll put her life on the line for him . . .
When Akira Ayres finds the brawny Scot with a musket ball in his thigh, the healer has no qualms about doing whatever it takes to save his life. Even if it means fleeing with him across the Highlands to tend to his wounds while English redcoats are closing in. Though Akira is as fierce and brave as any of her clansmen, even she's intimidated by the fearsome, brutally handsome Highlander who refuses to reveal his name.

Yet she can never learn his true identity.
Geordie knows if Akira ever discovers he's the Duke of Gordon, both her life and his will be forfeit in a heartbeat. The only way to keep the lass safe is to ensure she's by his side day and night. But the longer he's with her, the harder it becomes to think of letting her go. Despite all their differences, despite the danger-he will face death itself to make her his . . .

"Readers get all the benefits of a modern road trip (forced proximity, lots and lots of dialogue, and uninterrupted time for the hero and heroine's love to grow) without technology or secondary characters interrupting the main story arc. About halfway through there is a pretty darn huge plot twist, too. This book kept me on my toes and anxious for more." -- Book Riot

I couldn't bear listening to the narrators, but I finished it as the story was very good. I can't understand why if they chose to use a Male and a female narrator why the male narrator didn't read the male voices and the female read the female voices. Otherwise what was the point of having both genders if not. I can't understand. Im sure it would have been much better. Then I would have given it 5 stars. In my honest opinion It ruined the book. It would have been a lot better if just Penelope Hardy narrated because she was good. I liked her as a narrator.

very poor narrating

This was a decent story with interesting characters but unfortunately the narration was awful. The female narrator was okay (and probably would be better as a solo narrator), but sadly the male narrator just wasn’t suitable and it made for difficult listening. The chopping and changing of one narrator to the other for different chapters seemed a bit pointless. Narrators are a personal preference but I note other reviews were similar.

Good Story - Bad narration

What made the experience of listening to The Highland Duke the most enjoyable?

I love Amy's books. Having read a few already, I thought I'd treat myself to an audible, but complete waste of money. Very very disappointed. Yes the story is great but the whole essence is lost by the lack of abilities from the actors.
The cover design was very enticing.

How could the performance have been better?

This story needs re-recording with different actors. Penelope Hardy made a reasonable performance and would have been okay if she had remained the only actor. Alex Hyde-White was appalling and lazy. With the two together the audio was impossible to listen to, follow the story and enjoy.

Get another actor!!!!

So enjoyed the Amy Jarecki books with Joel’s wonderful narration, but we’ve gone from sublime to the ridiculous here. Two actors who can’t do Scottish let alone Highland accents to save themselves. So disappointing, bad narration really distracts from the story.

Please re-record with Joel Froomkin narrating!
