About this listen

Book #5 in Dickens' Christmas Books series.

In his final Christmas story, Dickens narrates the hair-raising experiences of a professor. As the protagonist dwells on his past sorrows and mistakes, a phantom visits him. It offers him a bizarre escape from painful recollections of yesteryear by offering to eradicate his memory.

Charles John Huffam Dickens was an English writer and social critic. He is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime and, by the 20th century, critics and scholars had recognized him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories are widely read, performed, and adapted today.

I found the story difficult to follow from start to finish. While I grasped the general gist of the plot, the excessively convoluted writing style made it a frustrating experience. As someone with dyslexia who relies on audiobooks to “read,” I usually enjoy classic literature. Had this book been written with the clarity and ease of Oliver Twist or A Christmas Carol, I believe it could have captivated audiences far more effectively. It’s a shame, as the potential was there. The narrator was superb!

I Can’t Believe This Is Dickens!!!
