Story
The book includes haunting ghost stories from Scotland. In this section we touch upon phantom soldiers, ghostly lovers, mist-shrouded kilted apparitions, murderous ministers, and even a disappearing bank in a time slip. We have kept away from previously published or documented stories which is why you will not hear about Tam O'Shanter by Burns or the ghost from Shakespeare's Scottish play.
Summary
Running parallel to the conventional history of Liverpool ... there is an unseen seam of supernatural stories that have been largely ignored by the strait-laced historians,' says Torn Slemen, who is, of course, fascinated by this other history and no subject matter is too strange or too terrifying to merit his scrutiny. While some stories may prove to be nothing more than urban myths, many turn out to be only too spine-chillingly true.
Take for example the phantom mare of Dovecot House, which wreaked revenge on Ralph Walsh, the man who had poisoned her...
Plus:
- The chilling case of the greedy Toxteth man who was willing to sacrifice the soul of a homeless man to obtain the winning Euromillions Lottery numbers from the Devil
- The psychopathic doppelganger that attempted to kill its flesh-and-blood counterpart.
- The "Red Menace" - a ghastly zombie-like being that has stalked Liverpool children for decades.
- The Phantom Road that appears on the M62 and hypnotically draws motorists to their deaths.
- The gut-wrenching story of the Wind from Hell - when a raging hurricane uprooted trees and coffins galore in St James's Cemetery - was it a natural occurrence - or the result of a gypsy's curse? This story is not to be read if you have a weak stomach!
- The well-documented case of the "Sefton Park Vampires" who terrorised a party of students in the 1960s.
- The boy who was stalked by a "fetch" - a creepy little wizened figure of an old woman who followed the child home to...well, you'll have to read the book to find out.
- The terrifying case of a bizarre, apparently cannibalistic entity known as "Hilty" who had his lair in a derelict house on William Henry Street
- The bizarre case of the four suicides committed across Liverpool on the same night that linked up to form a perfect geometric design on a map of the city...
Plus many more strange tales from Liverpool's darker side...

narration is distracting
Found this book interesting but kept thinking how much better this book would be with a narrator that could do a Liverpudlian accent. This narrator is good, but the book didn't really work with an American accent.

More Creepy Little Known Stories
This was another great collection of strange and unusual tales of haunted city of Liverpool from noted author Tom Slemen. His book series can frighten, educate, inform and entertain. His meticulous research combined with a gift for storytelling make this an enjoyable read. These tales are all true, unusual and unsettling. They are also addicting and difficult to put down. I read and listened to the audio book version. The American female narrator was clear, and delivered a somewhat monotone reading. These books are British and should be read by a British narrator.
