Summary

DI Rebus is buried under a pile of paperwork but an escalating dispute between the upstart Tommy Telford and Big Ger Cafferty's gang gives Rebus an escape clause. Telford is known to have close links with a Chechen gangster bringing refugees into Britain as prostitutes.

When Rebus takes under his wing a distraught Bosnian call girl, it gives him a personal reason to make sure Telford goes back to Paisley and pronto. Then Rebus's daughter is the victim of an all too professional hit-and-run and Rebus knows that there is now nothing he won't do to bring down prime suspect Tommy Telford - even if it means cutting a deal with the devil.

You got to love Rebus

Great book the Rebus character is a lovable rouge but everyone knows one like him. The book has a great story line with deals with criminals, attempted murder, little old ladies as drug mules

Best so far...

'Reading' these'these novels in order you're struck by how Rankin grows as a writer of both plot and character. Those of us now following Rebus' story from Book 1 are catching up on a 'soap ' which has been 30 years in the telling and are eagerly tuning in for the next episode to find out what fresh pain and anguish Rankin has in store for his, and our, poor hero. In terms of plot I thought this was the best in the sequence - several stands carefully juggled and brought together in a series of surprising denouements. PS as ever, superbly read/performed by James MacPherson - love your 'Big Ger', James!

Great Characters, let down by a poor story/plot

I am a long time Rebus reader, loved all other books, until this one, got half way through and stopped reading, put it down and never started it again.

Simply the best

What can I say that has not already been said? Ian Rankin, in my opinion, is simply the best crime writer on the planet. This Rebus story is my first in an audio version. A most enjoyable experience with very professional reader.

Another great story

Rebus unraveled the plot brilliantly - cleverly written to link together the various crimes - There was intrigue to the end.
