Story
Erik knew one thing after dropping in, when he first saw the numbers before his eyes, the rumors about the "cursed" were true. He was in another world. Survival wasn’t assured. Cultivate, get skills, grow abilities, or die. His old life, as a combat medic, had been hard, but he had learned some valuable lessons. And he wasn’t alone. His best friend, a marine recon sniper, like always, was right by his side. Could they figure out this fantasy world? What does it mean to ascend? How will they master the magic of this strange place?

I never believed in the whole “light at the end of the tunnel” folly where people, after having a near-death experience, would startle awake in a cold sweat exclaiming, “I saw the light!” But there I was, in this so-called “tunnel” facing a glaring light, when the last thing I remembered was sleeping in my room - the royal bed-chamber, as others called it. Had I died? If so, how? King Grey once benefited from unrivaled strength, wealth, and prestige in a world governed by martial ability but now finds himself reborn in a society dominated by magic.

Story
I spent most of my life trying to get by with whatever happiness I could, that included alcohol, food, and porn. My death was unpleasant and humiliating. However, death is something we all need to go through. A bit like a proctology exam: necessary, but never anything one wants to go through while it's happening. However, death was supposed to be the end of it. Either way, the pain, suffering, and failures were supposed to be over. No, I ended up as a small stone, strapped to a table, while a pimple-faced teenager rubbed my facets and told me how "lovely" I was.

Great story... Stiff narration... Clunky-@ss prose.
It says something that this story was good enough to overcome its many, severe, technical flaws. Normally, I’d have returned any book that is so inundated with constant grammatical errors, incorrectly used words, and superfluous adjectives. It’s almost like the book was dictated by an adult to a ten year-old who then typed it into a Windows 2000 copy of Word, and then let “Clippy” auto-edit the entire manuscript. Add to this a wooden narrator who consistently mis-pronounces 5th grade vocabulary words (for example “quench” as quelch, and “cuirass” as curry-ass), and the result should have been an unlistenable sh!t-sandwich. However, I was very surprised to find myself listening all the way to the unsurprisingly abrupt and premature end of the audio-book. Looking back I’m still confounded by the mysterious alchemy that combined an initially non-sensical, but original LitRPG story with the aforementioned considerable flaws which still managed to result in an Audiobook that I would recommend to fans of the GameLit genre. I’m still scratching my head.... I highly, highly recommend that the author does the bare minimum of asking his favorite Jr High English teacher to take a red pen to the next installment of this series, as well as asking the narrator to play the recording for his Mom, or girlfriend, or Uber driver... just so someone who speaks English as a first or second language has a chance to help him get the basic pronunciations right. I will be personally disappointed (in a scolding parent kind of way) if the author doesn’t spend some more effort to tighten up the next book in the series.

Good story and narration! MC wakes up without his memories in an empty hall that seams to go on forever. He quickly finds out that he is in some form off game/game-world and must fight for survival. Will he be able to figure things out before the game kills him? This one was interesting. I am looking forward seeing where the author takes things from here.
