About this listen

Regardless of his background or who might be helping him along, no man becomes a Marine until he has successfully completed Marine Corps Recruit Training. Then, if he makes it, life doesn't get easier - he gets tougher. He may get to do the toughest job around: combat infantry. And in 1966, he will almost certainly end up in Vietnam.

Frank Evans is a Navy sailor willing to do whatever is necessary to become a Marine. He's tough enough - and he has a general interested in his success. But success is measured in many ways. Frank finds out combat and the Marine Corps' definition of success change a man. Some of the changes are a matter of pride. Others - well, you learn to live with them.

This story just feels off. I love my military books, but never having been in action, I still sense there's something about them all that shines through, no matter the side, era, or skill of the writer. I don't know if this is supposed to be fiction, but it comes off like it, it's written first person and third person interchangeably - a Sailor turned marine just happens to be the best NCO that everyone from general on down to the grunt needs, and always arrives in the nick of time, just as something's cooking off and (wouldn't you know it) They're 1 good Sergeant short of it bearing fruit. Aside from this, the endless "oh wow heres the gunny everyones talking about" and the reply "I'm nothing special" followed predictably (after the 10th time) by "that's not what we heard...." gets tired and boring and was ultimately my reason, together with unbelievable situations, and idealistic "if I were a sergeant, then I'd do ....." type stories. Hence can't finish this one.

A perfect NCO that everyone just loves
