Story
Agent Raibert Kaminski and the crew of the Transtemporal Vehicle Kleio have stumbled across a temporal implosion that has claimed two whole universes, and neither Raibert nor his crew can figure out what caused this calamity, or how to stop its spread. Meanwhile, old colleagues of Raibert’s from the Antiquities Rescue Trust, together with a version of Samuel Pepys transplanted from the 17th century into the 30th, have proposed an expedition into the past. The goal? To branch the timeline by preventing the Plague of Justinian, one of the worst pandemics in human history.

Story
Imperial Intelligence couldn't find them, the Imperial Fleet couldn't catch them, and local defenses couldn't stop them. It seemed the planet-wrecking pirates were invincible. But they made a big mistake when they raided ex-commando leader Alicia DeVries' quiet home/work, tortured and murdered her family, and then left her for dead. Alicia decided to turn "pirate" herself, and stole a cutting-edge AI ship from the empire to start her vendetta. Her fellow veterans think she's gone crazy, the Imperial Fleet has shoot-on-sight orders. And, of course, the pirates want her dead, too.

In the twentieth century Earth sent probes, transmissions and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy.

Fighting for her life in a death-match is the perfect cover. The Valerie's Elites Boxed Set includes the entire series at a great price! It started as a simple intel mission. Then it turned sideways. Valerie goes off mission, trusting her gut and wits more than her physical abilities to get on the inside, to help bring justice to the slaves and the downtrodden. She is, after all, the justice enforcer. In the process, she finds herself teaming up with locals to take down an empire, right a cascade of wrongs, and kick some serious ass.
Summary
New stand-alone novel from New York Times best-selling author of the Honor Harrington series, David Weber
A Man of Two Worlds
Doctor Benjamin Schröder was far from a man of action. In fact, he was a history teacher - chairman of the Castle Rock University history department - and if his life wasn't perfect, it was close. Until, that is, the discussion of his star student Elzbietá Abramowski's dissertation on Operation Oz, the Pacific Allies' invasion of Vladivostok, staged through occupied Japan to meet their Imperial German allies, was brutally interrupted.
The psychotic episode that turned his entire world upside down struck with absolutely no warning, and it was more terrifying than anything he should have been able to imagine, leaving him with a complete, incredibly detailed set of false nightmare memories. Not just of his own life but of an entire ghastly world in which Operation Oz had never happened. In which millions of helpless civilians had been systematically slaughtered in extermination camps that were horrific beyond belief. In which there was still a Soviet Union. In which the Chinese Communists had succeeded, the Korean Peninsula had been permanently divided, thousands of nuclear warheads had spread their deadly threat across the entire Earth, and the Middle East was a festering sore of bloodshed, fanaticism, and terrorism.
The knowledge that those false memories had come from somewhere inside his own psyche was terrible, but with the help of Commander Abramowski, a highly decorated navy fighter pilot who’d been forced to deal with her own PTSD after crippling combat wounds invalided her out of service, he’s put his life back together. With Elzbietá's support, he's learned to deal with the nightmares, to recognize that they are only nightmares that can't - and won't - be permitted to rule his life.
Until, that is, a lunatic named Raibert Kaminski knocks on his door one afternoon with an impossible and horrifying story about alternate realities, time travel, temporal knots, and more than a dozen doomed universes that must inevitably die if the temporal storm front rushing toward the distant future isn't stopped. He has to be lying, of course. Or completely insane. But what if he's not a madman after all? What if he's actually telling the truth?
That possibility is the most terrifying thing of all. Because if he is, the false memories aren't false after all, and that other world is just as real as the one Schröder has always known. And if that's true, Benjamin Schröder is about to become the greatest mass murderer in human history, because he has to choose. Whether he acts or refuses to act, Benjamin Schröder is the one man who will decide which universe lives and which dies, along with every star system, every galaxy - and every single human being - in it.
Including the woman he's discovered he loves more than life itself.

Good concept, entirely too many times explaining killing kids
This is the first less than stellar review I have for a David Weber book, a coauthored one as in this case. The stories basis is interesting and the ending is probably good, as it is in Mr. Weber’s books. However I didn’t make it to the end. There were multiple instances where the authors described the intentional killing of innocents, that isn’t unusual. What bugged me is expressly stating the killing of children and how they died. The final point was when it was described in detail what was left of a mans children, as he watched his wife pass, telling her to be at peace, there daughters are fine. Yes, it is an alternate reality, the ending will most likely put things (mostly) to rights. There is gore, and there is vulgarity, this for me crossed from one into another.

Weber has no living peer as an S.F. writer. The only valid comparison is Weber vs Heinlein. So what went wrong ??? I don't know why I couldn't finish it. Sad day.

Narrator's tone kept knocking me out of the story.
As stated, I kept finding myself retelling portions of the story in a different tone or cadence and found certain portions had become more dramatic, humorous, touching, etc.. I feel that this book would've been better if I had sat down to read it rather than listen to it.

Big Weber fan, but this one rubs me the wrong way
I've read most of what Weber has written, including the gigantic Safehold series. In principle it doesn't seem like this one should be a lot different. There are some good concepts in here with a somewhat novel take on things, including a pretty reasonable stab at how VR/AR/AI will play out (this isn't a spoiler). My problem is with the (not a spoiler) time travel. All of weber's books require a pretty significant amount of suspension of disbelief, however, the science is at least all self-consistent, and if you are willing to accept a few "future discoveries" in science, you get some fun stories out of it. The core of this book is about time travel, and the underlying physics (as explained near the beginning of the book), just seems nonsensical. Too much of it just doesn't hold together logically, and this lack of plausibility just makes the entire plot unenjoyable for me. I have read numerous other time travel books, and have enjoyed most of them. Most have come up with a theory of time travel which seems plausible. I managed to get about 1/3 of the way through this book before deciding I just don't care. It is VERY rare for me to give up on a book I've gotten this far into, and some people may be able to push past the time travel issues, so I'll still give it 2 stars, but I'm glad this is a one-off.

Big Weber fan. I see no Weber style here. I guess it's a Holo book, but I'm not familiar with his work. Long sections of socio political posturing about PC correctness and firearms. Got to chapter 8 waiting for some interest, none presented to me. Audible no longer seems to often a returning book policy. To bad, I would return this one for sure.
