About this listen
In the dying days of a brutal civil war, Sohail Haque stumbles upon an abandoned building. Inside, he finds a young woman whose story will haunt him for a lifetime to come...
Almost a decade later, Sohail’s sister Maya returns home after a long absence to find her beloved brother transformed. While Maya has stuck to her revolutionary ideals, Sohail has shunned his old life to become a charismatic religious leader. And when Sohail decides to send his son to madrasa, the conflict between them comes to a devastating climax.
Set in Bangladesh at a time when religious fundamentalism is on the rise, The Good Muslim is an epic story about faith, family and the long shadow of war.

I dont know if it's a language issue or reading issue, there's certain words in Arabic and Bangla that were a bit cringe to hear? I do not know if it's written like that so that could just be my ignorance but only listening to it as someone from Bangladesh and is muslim is kind of off putting. Luckily it's not the bulk of the book but I was so confused with some words that were being pronounced then I realised it's not pronounced like that and it clicked what it meant lool.
Other than that the narrating is great, unsure about the asian accents in it but otherwise pretty good.
I wish the author or narrator ? translated some of the words for people who dont understand what they are. I know a simple search on the net could solve it but it's easier having it in the book or ßatleast a translation when the word is first used when you listen.
I do not know much about the war but I'm glad this book taught me a bit about that, honestly a really bitter sweet ending and really at the end the title clicked. I guess the good muslim is her brother ?? if it's not that then I'm very still confused haha
But otherwise this book really talks about the reality of everything, the war, the rape, the abortions, the sexual assaults that happen to boys from their Male teachers. like damn I knew it would be deep and it is!
It's sad that Sohail got further from his family by coming to god. The opposite should technically happen. Hopefully he grew more in the future!
It's about the war between Pakistan and Bangladesh not really about being muslim
