Summary

The second in the thrilling fantasy series returning listeners to the Six Duchies and the magical world of the Farseers, from the author of the best-selling Assassin’s Apprentice.

Fitz has succeeded in rescuing Prince Dutiful from the clutches of the Piebald rebels, and has returned with him to Buckkeep castle. With Dutiful safe again, Queen Kettricken can proceed with plans to marry him to the Outislander princess, Elliania, but with tensions building among the peoples of the Six Duchies over Kettricken’s tolerance of the Wittted, even Buckkeep is no longer safe.

A reluctant Fitz is assigned to protect the young prince, and also train him in the Skill, and in doing so he finally makes contact not only with his estranged daughter, Nettle, but with someone in Buckkeep who may possess a greater Skill talent than Fitz. And who may represent a terrible threat to the Farseers.

Meanwhile, Elliania arrives, and before she will accept Prince Dutiful’s betrothal challenges him to undertake an impossible quest. He must kill a legendary Outislander dragon.

The Tawny Man Trilogy

This outstanding trilogy ties up some of Robin Hobb's earlier story threads so characters from earlier books, nothing to do with the main characters the Fool and Fitz start appearing in "The Golden Fool" I am thoroughly impressed with Robin Hobb's literary skills. This trilogy is enthralling! I would recommend it to anyone. My only regret is that there are no more of her books available on Audible. I have listened to them all! But "The Tawny Man" is the best of them all!

Narrators

I wish that the different narrators in this series of books could be more consistent in saying names.

Sadly this felt like filler

I was hoping for a quest type adventure but so little actually happens that this felt like filler to make it up to a trilogy. I am a completist so will read the next one but wanted more from this one.
Also, technically there seemed a lack of attention from the producer - there were too many instances of repeated lines that weren't edited out and quite a few mispronunciations that weren't picked up. Some of the edits were a little clunky too.

Repeats itself.

This book is great apart for the narration repeats itself a lot in many chapters.

narrator brings it all to life

Narrator is brilliant.
I think this is the only Robin Hobb where I would give the narrator more stars than the story!
(story is still good, just not as eventful as many of the others in the series - although of course it provides vital stepping stones in the trilogy arc)

another excellent sequel

these stories are so engrossing be it this trilogy or the assassin series. my only criticism is that the characters seem to change, in early readings kettriken was more scandanavian like, whereas this stoeynwas cross French and Spanish, prefer the former, consistency across the books would have been better in both narrator and character portrayal, just my opinion

Loved it!

Once again Hobb does not fail to deliver another fantastic addition to the series. The narrator Nick Taylor certainly makes it come alive.

Great, but...

another fantastic fantasy from Robin Hobb, this audiobook is fantastically voiced, and the only drawback at all is that this is the middle book of a trilogy, and as such the story is rather unfinished... but that just makes me want the next book even more!

Some Editing Mistakes

I love the story and really enjoyed the narrator but the editing is lacking: no pauses between chapters and some of the narrator‘s mistakes have been left in.

Painful and precious

Many wounds and shackles Fitz lays upon himself are. often his own crafted out of fear and self pity. It makes me reflect on the times that I have been foolish.

This book is a sorrowful, but precious shard. Painful to hold and hard to let go. Out of the series, it is probably my favorite.
