Wizardwood, a sentient wood. The most precious commodity in the world. Like many legendary wares, it comes only from the Rain River Wilds. But how can one trade with the Rain Wilders, when only a liveship, fashioned from wizardwood, can negotiate the perilous waters of the Rain River? Rare and valuable, a liveship will quicken only when three members, from successive generations, have died on board. The liveship Vivacia is about to undergo her quickening, as Althea Vestrit’s father is carried on deck in his death-throes.

Story
I’m Val Thorvald, and I’m an assassin. When magical bad guys hurt people, I take care of them. Permanently. This doesn’t make me popular with the rest of the magical community — as you can tell from the numerous break-ins and assassination attempts I’ve endured over the years. But thanks to my half-elven blood, a powerful sword named Chopper, and a telepathic tiger with an attitude, I’ve always been able to handle my problems with aplomb. Maybe some cursing and swearing, too, but definitely aplomb.

Summary
The second in the thrilling fantasy series returning listeners to the Six Duchies and the magical world of the Farseers, from the author of the best-selling Assassin’s Apprentice.
Fitz has succeeded in rescuing Prince Dutiful from the clutches of the Piebald rebels, and has returned with him to Buckkeep castle. With Dutiful safe again, Queen Kettricken can proceed with plans to marry him to the Outislander princess, Elliania, but with tensions building among the peoples of the Six Duchies over Kettricken’s tolerance of the Wittted, even Buckkeep is no longer safe.
A reluctant Fitz is assigned to protect the young prince, and also train him in the Skill, and in doing so he finally makes contact not only with his estranged daughter, Nettle, but with someone in Buckkeep who may possess a greater Skill talent than Fitz. And who may represent a terrible threat to the Farseers.
Meanwhile, Elliania arrives, and before she will accept Prince Dutiful’s betrothal challenges him to undertake an impossible quest. He must kill a legendary Outislander dragon.

The Tawny Man Trilogy
This outstanding trilogy ties up some of Robin Hobb's earlier story threads so characters from earlier books, nothing to do with the main characters the Fool and Fitz start appearing in "The Golden Fool" I am thoroughly impressed with Robin Hobb's literary skills. This trilogy is enthralling! I would recommend it to anyone. My only regret is that there are no more of her books available on Audible. I have listened to them all! But "The Tawny Man" is the best of them all!

At last a narrator worthy of the novel
After strange choices of narrator off the first two trilogies it is a pleasure to have one who flows with the story. Its not that he does anything special but like a football referee has a good game if you don't notice them so it is here. Very enjoyable listen.

Amazing story, great narrator, poorly edited!
I loved jumping back into the story of Fitz again, and do enjoy the new narrator, however, I've noticed that on several occasions the editor has left in the narrators mistake corrections - for example at 32.29 of Chapter 2 the narrator says “We already know that” then pauses, and corrects himself to “We already knew that” as is written in the book. I have noticed quite a few little mistakes in the editing like that and wish desperately that Audible/Harper Audio would correct these mistakes.

An epic saga brilliantly brought to life
I’ve loved robin Hobbs work for 20 years since I first stumbled on her work so the story is a 100% success long before I found it on audible and the narration by nick taylor does it justice in spades, superbly read and intoned, great voices and dramatic emphasis, I wish he’d read the while series 10/10

Great book, terrible editing
I really enjoyed this audiobook. It's a wonderful story and I liked Nick Taylor's performance a great deal. However the editing is incredibly poor - too short cuts at ends of chapters, some sections repeated, some parts (including the end of the epilogue!) missed out altogether. A recut version of this would be great if that is possible.

Perfection in words
I seriously can't get enough of this world Robin has created. As for the characters. To me they are real, they are out there living very real lives. I can't wait for the next and I consider myself lucky that there are a few more ahead of me to read/listen. The narration and storytelling helps bring these wonderful characters to life.

Painful and precious
Many wounds and shackles Fitz lays upon himself are. often his own crafted out of fear and self pity. It makes me reflect on the times that I have been foolish.
This book is a sorrowful, but precious shard. Painful to hold and hard to let go. Out of the series, it is probably my favorite.
