About this listen

The second in the thrilling fantasy series returning readers to the Six Duchies and the magical world of the Farseers, from the author of the bestselling Assassin’s Apprentice.

Fitz has succeeded in rescuing Prince Dutiful from the clutches of the Piebald rebels, and has returned with him to Buckkeep castle. With Dutiful safe again, Queen Kettricken can proceed with plans to marry him to the Outislander princess, Elliania, but with tensions building among the peoples of the Six Duchies over Kettricken’s tolerance of the Wittted, even Buckkeep is no longer safe. A reluctant Fitz is assigned to protect the young prince, and also train him in the Skill, and in doing so he finally makes contact not only with his estranged daughter, Nettle, but with someone in Buckkeep who may possess a greater Skill talent than Fitz. And who may represent a terrible threat to the Farseers. Meanwhile, Elliania arrives, and before she will accept Prince Dutiful’s betrothal challenges him to undertake an impossible quest. He must kill a legendary Outislander dragon.

Holy bloody dogstink, Robin Hobb is an absolute genius. She leaves me floored with each book and this book The Golden Fool even more, for those who have already read you probably know which scene I mean. The way she has intertwined characters from The Liveship Traders into this trilogy has been just magical. I absolutely love Robin Hobb's books and trilogies, they are so detailed, so rich, I just wish there was no end. I know I have still along way to go before i finish the whole series but the worlds she has created are like a fine weaving of silk and gold and i just cant not get enough. They are pieces of art. Only this lady could define her own amazing mind and work into words. As this wonderful trilogy develops, FitzChivalry or as Tom Badgerlock as he is now known has become more involved at court and taken up the task to become the new skill master to train the young prince in the control of the Skill. He must form a skill coterie for the prince before he sets off on his task to outislands, his duty is to help the prince fulfil the Narcheska Elliania's challenge to win her heart. Fantastically well written, beautifully developed storyline, plot and characters that are totally believable, to the extent that you become so involved you have to keep reading to make sure it turns out well for them. The relationship between Fitz and the Fool is beautiful and sensitively handled, with enough clues and innuendos to keep you guessing and leave you astounded. I truly and highly recommend if haven't read this series yet, get that remedied right now...😁💙🔥😳

Truly Astounding.

Really well written. The writer has a way of portraying situations and events in a clear manner, using beautiful language. The storyline is imaginative and the characters substantial.

I loved jumping back into the story of Fitz again, and do enjoy the new narrator, however, I've noticed that on several occasions the editor has left in the narrators mistake corrections - for example at 32.29 of Chapter 2 the narrator says “We already know that” then pauses, and corrects himself to “We already knew that” as is written in the book. I have noticed quite a few little mistakes in the editing like that and wish desperately that Audible/Harper Audio would correct these mistakes.

Amazing story, great narrator, poorly edited!

This book is great apart for the narration repeats itself a lot in many chapters.

Repeats itself.
