About this listen

Emmy and her little sister Dani are sleeping in their bedroom upstairs. Their parents are in the kitchen. A knife is jammed to their mother’s throat. Their father has a stack of kitchen plates balanced on his back.

The intruder rasps, ‘Don’t be breathing too hard now. I reckon smashing plates is the sort of noise that’ll wake a child. Have them coming down to see what’s going on. There can’t be witnesses ...’ What Detective Maddie Ives will find in that nice family kitchen will horrify even this most hardened cop. And she knows the victim ...

The ending made me cry. Wow! Never had such a reaction before or to the loss that occurs in this latest and possibly last in the series? I’ve read them all. What a fantastic book xx

Brilliant, just brilliant

Twists and turns of the story line. Some elements were a little distressing/sad. Need to keep your wits about you at times

a brilliant last in the series (so far?) book. full of twists, surprises, shocks, tears and humour. the characters are full and alive and the team loyalty is deep.

Everything you expect from a Maddie Ives story with added. Kept me up at night not being able to stop listening. Had me laughing out loud and crying like a fool.
Heed the warning on the graphic violence, it is hard to listen to at times but harder to stop.
Full of twists and turns that you don't see coming.
Some parts are awful and I really did not enjoy where the story went but that's because it was so well written, I think the author wanted the reader to feel the way I did while reading it. This book will stay with me a long time.

I’m a big fan of the author, and especially the Maddie Ives series but this one was a real disappointment.
Apart from being much more formulaic than usual, the ending made no sense at all, and seemed to come from a position of knowing every about police procedure and nothing about the law.
But the real sin was the “square-jawed, flawless, superhero status” afforded to one of the main protagonists and the saccharin laced dialogue that went along with it.
Time to put this series back on the shelf I’m afraid.

I’m a Gallagher fan, but this one was phoned in.
