About this listen

'Chilling, tragic, and utterly immersive.' ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

'This book. Wow, Just, wow! A beautifully written and unforgettable story. I can't stop thinking about it' ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Occupied France, 1944

In the shadow of the ravaged battlefields of Verdun, where the scars of the First World War never healed, Vianne, struggling to hold onto her crumbling family chateau, takes in her traumatized nephew Blaise after the arrest of her sister by the Nazis.

But when Blaise says he can see eerie figures in the fog and whispers from the forbidden forest beyond the fence, it seems something ancient and sorrowful stirs in the soil where soldiers of the Great War once bled. As strange guests arrive at the old house and secrets surface, Vianne must face the terrifying possibility that the brutal SS aren’t the only horrors she must face…

Atmospheric, bone-chilling in places and beautifully written! Such a clever plot weaved together with the WW2 backdrop as well as the paranormal aspect. Loved every second! The narrator was brilliant too.

Absolutely fantastic story!

Not really sure what the book was meant to be…I didn’t find it particularly engrossing..it wasn’t really about WW1 or 2, nor was it particularly ghostly….personally I thought the author missed lots of opportunities to expand on the multiple themes and make it a much more interesting book. It wasn’t however an easy listen

Nothing special
