Summary

The Gender Knot, Allan Johnson's response to the pain and confusion that men and women experience by living with gender inequality, explains what patriarchy is and isn't, how it works, and what gets in the way of understanding and doing something about it. Johnson's simple yet powerful approach avoids the paralyzing trap of guilt, blame, anger, and defensive denial that often results from conversations about gender.

This edition features:

  • Updated references, data, resources, and examples, especially in relation to issues of sexual orientation and gender identity (e.g., gay marriage, transgender)
  • A new chapter, "What Changes and What Does Not: Manhood and Violence", that provides an extended analysis of the causes of men's violence as a patriarchal phenomenon

The book is published by Temple University Press.

Critic reviews

"Johnson's book is beautifully written, thoughtful, and provides compelling analyses of patriarchy and the powerful ideology that supports it and inhibits change. It is a guidebook for a life-changing adventure." ( Contemporary Sociology)
"An excellent gift for anyone who 'just doesn't get it' about feminism." ( Psychology of Women Quarterly)

The book university professors assign . . .

This is the 3rd edition of the seminal book on patriarchy that is used in university classrooms across the country. Forget all the biased stuff you read on the internet -- this book is the scholarship of professor Allan G Johnson of Temple University. What he says is written with academic rigour -- but is easy listening for the average punter.

This book makes depressing listening, as you will learn the overwhelming reality is that we live within a patriarchal society 10,000 years in the making. It won't be unraveled within our lifetimes. But reading it means you will gain the tools to discern where harm lies for women in our wider society --- and how it harms men's happiness in the process. You'll be in the vanguard of understanding institutional patriarchy . . . the subtle ways women are marginalised that you've never even realised (not even women see all of it). Well worth every single minute of listening time. It is an easy, fascinating listen. Absolutely recommend it.

Overall thought provoking

The book raises interesting aspects of everyday life that I didn't see before. It's a successful sociology book that "helps the fish see the water it lives in". Some parts of the book are repetitive, and the concepts are being repeated over and over again, making some parts of the chapters kind of the same

one for the men's groups

if you're fed up with women complaining, with feminists yelling about inequality, read this.
Men's groups, Father's Rights, incels, this book tells you exactly what to say and do.
the author goes into the origins of patriarchy and how important war is to manly men, and to capitalism.
Read it, it's superb. better, listen to it. it's so good you'll be rewinding to listen to the best bits again.

If you are a man you need to read this!

What can I say? This book opened my eyes about how patriarchy has shaped my character (I am a man) as well as the character of all my friends, family and people around me. I was lucky that my partner suggested for me to read this book. If I ever have a son I would like for him to read this book before go out in adult life.
