Summary

An Amazon Charts and Washington Post bestseller.

“A relevant, compelling, and compassionate look at the torture of conflicted loyalties and the slipperiness of truth.” - Jenna Blum, New York Times bestselling author of Those Who Save Us and The Lost Family

In this evocative debut novel, Katrin Schumann weaves a riveting story of past and present - and how love can lead us astray.

At twenty-four, Katie Gregory feels like life is looking up: she’s snagged a great job in New York City and is falling for a captivating artist - and memories of her traumatic past are finally fading. Katie’s life fell apart almost a decade earlier, during an idyllic summer at her family’s cabin on Eagle Lake when her best friend accused her father of sexual assault. Throughout his trial and imprisonment, Katie insisted on his innocence, dodging reporters and clinging to memories of the man she adores.

Now he’s getting out. Yet when Katie returns to the shuttered lakeside cabin, details of that fateful night resurface: the chill of the lake, the heat of first love, the terrible sting of jealousy. And as old memories collide with new realities, they call into question everything she thinks she knows about family, friends, and, ultimately, herself. Now, Katie’s choices will be put to the test with life-altering consequences.

Great story/bad narration

This was a great story with a lot of real life truths to it, but the overly dramatic reading almost made me stop listening. Not everything has to be romantically emphasized, it was way over the top.

Spent more time skipping ahead than actually listening

Really disappointing because had interesting premise but...
Author seemed more interested in showing off her creative writing abilities than in progressing plot. Spent inordinate amounts of time and words on how emotionally challenging situation was and overly detailed and unnecessary descriptions resulted in main character that was more annoying that sympathetic. Audible presenters melodramatic reading of book just exacerbated. Literally started hitting the skip button because I hate not finishing a book but couldn’t handle listening to it so one star and five eye-rolls.

Great Mystery, but too Dramatic.

I am writing this at the midpoint. The writing is dramatic and the delivery of the narrator is dramatic. For me, it is over the top. I do care about the end of the story. I don't hate the narration. It's just that together they make me a little bit weary.

The main character has nausea too often to matter to me.

I will leave it at that.

Graphic descriptions of rape.

I would not have chosen this book to listen to had I known this. The story is heart-wrenching, but I would have preferred not to have heard the graphic trial testimony.

Disappointing

The story was dull and predictable. I feel like I wasted my time hoping the story would improve... I should have returned it.

VERY GOOD!

I really enjoyed listening to this book! I thought the story was very well done. The premise is very captivating. I found Two of the main characters especially (Lulu and the father) to be quite intriguing. Lots of loose ends throughout which kept me wondering and questioning exactly what happened here, and the intrigue continues almost to the end. A good part of the story takes place during the summer at a lakeside family home, rife with young teenage energy, new love, and all the stuff that goes on between teenagers during the summer!

I wasn’t too sure about the narrator at first, okay, I really didn’t like her at all at first(!), but I became so involved in the story that, after awhile, she didn’t seem so bad!!

Let it be over

I am having a hard time deciding what exactly made this book so insufferable. Not sure if it is the breathy dramatic tone of the performance or just the trite character in general. One to skip.

Struggled to finish.

Was drawn out too long Story would be ok but it jumps around a lot & I just started loosing interest. Was happy when finished, ready to put the book down long before it was over.

Way too long and super wordy!

I started reading this book about 3 weeks ago, I think. I typically finish a book in a few days, a week at the most. This one, I lost interest a few times. This story is all over the place and it makes you want to scream... GET TO THE POINT, ALREADY! I don’t mind long books, as long as it flows. This one rambled on forever, it seemed like. If it wasn’t for a road trip and the audible app, I probably would’ve never finish this book. I’m glad I did though. I actually like the ending, although it seemed like I was never going to get there.
