Summary

In The Five STEPS to a Winning Mindset, Professor Damian Hughes, the acclaimed author of Liquid Thinking and How to Think Like Sir Alex Ferguson, draws on both his lifetime experience and his academic background within sport, organization and change psychology to reveal the best ways to create a winning mindset in both personal and professional life.

Having worked with some of the top teams in the UK and watched some of the best coaches in the country at work, Hughes distills the five keys principles that separate the best coaches and teams from the rest: Simplicity, Tripwires, Emotions, Practical, Stories: STEPS.

The role of a sports-team leader is fascinating, complex and tough. Fantasy football leagues may convince us that success is all about buying players and selecting a team. In reality it is about creating winning environments - recruiting, developing and nurturing talent, effectively communicating a shared vision with a diverse collection of individuals, delivering on enormous expectations from a range of stakeholders, overcoming significant challenges, handling pressure and staying focused throughout: a set of challenges familiar to leaders in all sectors.

Coaching gold

Damian develops some excellent concepts into practical and usable tools. The approach is 'real world' in that there are no magic bullets and without investment of the coach to take the ideas and adapt them specifically to their environment nothing will change. Sport is can be a problematic area for business analogies as it can be seen to demand a winner and a loser. Damian keeps the focus on the mindset ( the key to the book) in a balanced manner, no 'gung-ho' nonsense!! Really enjoyed it and have already taken several ideas into the work and personal space to good effect.

Was a daily deal and better than I expected.

Was a daily deal and better than I expected. A few actionables and takeaways, but on the whole more narrative than science.

How it is.....

Sometimes the simple things are overlooked due to there simplicity and sometimes you need someone to tell you how it is. That’s what this book does. Lots of insightful tales from well known sporting personalities, well researched and insightful thoughts and practices. Hugely transferable skills to many different practices. I personally read in the hope that I could better lead the team I run in the kitchen retail industry. Lessons learnt definitely and also it felt good to be reassured that a lot of what I was doing already is something that isn’t unique to me/I’m not doing it wrong and now I’ve got a way to make it more efficient.
Thanks, I really enjoyed the book. I expect to read it again and I would recommend the book to anyone from stay at home mam or dad to business mogul.
