About this listen

The 50th Anniversary edition of the ground-breaking, worldwide bestselling feminist tract.

A worldwide bestseller, translated into over twelve languages, The Female Eunuch is a landmark in the history of the women’s movement.

Drawing liberally from history, literature and popular culture, past and present, Germaine Greer’s searing examination of women’s oppression is at once an important social commentary and a passionately argued masterpiece of polemic.

Probably the most famous, most widely read book on feminism ever.

Critic reviews

"A dazzling tract, erudite, outrageous, funny." (Cosmopolitan)

"The Female Eunuch retains that power of transformation; it asserts the possibility of creativity within female experience." (Guardian)

"Brilliantly written, quirky and sensible, full of bile and insight.... The best feminist book so far." (New York Times)

Substantially better than the Second sex (in terms of coherence and succinctness), but I’m afraid that is not a high bar to surpass. The book is interesting in how it links feminism to a socialist revolution. The final chapter of the book is the most clear, and least meandering.

Mediocre but illuminating

I have failed to read this since my university days. I missed out. Greer makes excellent, balanced points supported by evidence of the time and inspires in doing so. It is a sad reflection on society that I only found this dated in limited respects and times have not changed as much as perhaps they could have. that said, Greer covers the age of the book and its continued relevance in the Forward to this, the 50th anniversary edition. a must read for anyone interested in equality of people.

Accessible, empowering and relevant

amazing. hearing it in her voice is wonderful. the only problem I seem to experience is that the maximum volume on this listen is significantly lower that other listens. hope support can do something about that. Even dangerous literature deserves to be heard 😉

basic reading for any real feminist

If this book was the entire curriculum, the sum of all the education I was ever going to get, I'd be set for life! Feminist text seem so limiting a genre, seems more like general sociology and psychology, whatever the case you will not regret this read, be it man or woman. 100% literary classic!

Phenomenal

Greer herself says her book is not a brilliant book (which in itself it probably just modesty anyway), True enough, much of it is unduly academic, a lot of it is now obsolete, but it still have several chapters of brilliant, incisive, cogent argument that are enlightening, even heartening, and clear evidence of the woman's brilliance as a academician and a modern thinker. I think all women should read this book (and men too!)

Still offers brilliant and original insights
