Every victory comes at a cost.
The trail has gone cold. For months now, Emery Hazard and John-Henry Somerset have been trying to find something—anything—that might help them uncover the truth about the criminal organization operating out of the Cottonmouth Club. But every lead has turned out to be a dead end, and every step forward has cost them two steps back.
Until, one night, John-Henry is arrested for a terrible crime.
As their friends gather again in Wahredua, Emery and John-Henry must rush to prove John-Henry's innocence. The falsified evidence used to implicate him provides them with fresh clues, but as the charges against John-Henry ripple out into the community, they find themselves without their usual resources, and facing new and unexpected opposition.

Shaw is…endearing. North has my absolute sympathy, although he’s a handful as well. In comparison to those two, Auggie, Theo, and Tean are angels. Jem is…well, Jem. These six make great sidekicks for Jon-Henry and Emery’s latest adventure.
In all seriousness, when Jon-Henry is arrested for possessing child pornography, you know this is about to get real. Of course it’s not his, but he’s still under suspicion and no longer an active police officer. That computer tampering, along with some other weird stuff having to do with trafficking, has JH and Re taking matters into their own hands. Add their friends and it’s generalized chaos.
I don’t want to give too much away. Just…yeah, vintage Gregory Ashe. Violence, mayhem, humor, and kids with a cute dog. I loved the story, I loved the series, and if this is the end, it went out with a bang.
Gotta mention Tristan James. Each couple has a different narrator associated with them and I was thrilled to see Tristan returning to helm Emery and Jon-Henry’s book. He’s superb and I loved everything about this audio. You have to grab both it and the entire series.

John’s character arc is one of the most incredible I’ve ever read. This book really puts him through the wringer, it’s so heartbreaking and powerful and makes JH rethink all his life, his perception of self and his relationships. The locker room scene and the Letterman jacket scene were so gut wrenching and beautiful, all barriers down, our boys stripped out and laid bare. Their love is epic indeed. The perfect end to this outstanding crossover series. Well done Gregory, you are one of a kind ❤️

The audible book I was given as an advanced listener.
This final book has us focusing Emery Hazard and John-Henry Somerset, meaning we have Tristan James as the narrator. This is essential as this story is Somerset's, and no one can interpret him better.
I say it is Somerset's story, but Hazard is never anyone's sidekick. However, as it states in the blurb outlining the book Somerset is accused of an awful crime that does not help his already fragile standing in the town or his continuing fragile relationship with his father. Thus, before we know it we are plunged further into chaos and danger because some people cannot understand why Hazard and Somerset are unwilling to lie down. Yet how can they, when they know that there are wrongs which must be revealed, and the sinners must pay the price for the many that have lost their lives along the way or are in danger of doing so? However, this chapter in the series is too close to home in many ways.
Somerset frustrates Hazard and his friends by thinking he can cope by himself, as he believes the charmed life he has led previously has brought him to this point. He does not wish his family and friends to be tarnished by his reputation and the possible outcome of the crimes he has been accused of. We see him at his lowest point.
Although Somerset and Hazard's relationship is strong, with some of their sweetest moments appearing in this book; it is with their special brotherhood, Shaw, and North, Auggie and Theo, and Tean and Jem that the mystery is finally solved after travelling on a rollercoaster with so many twists and turns. It is a good example of when coming together, the strengths of one another create a whole. It is also a certainty with this crew, that although there are some nerve-racking and harrowing moments you know there will be some light moments to keep you going.
For me, one of the highlights of this series is seeing Hazard open himself up to making new friends, particularly the ongoing development of his relationships with Shaw and Tean.
Lastly, we get a great final chapter, showing us that family is not necessarily the one you are born into but can be the one in which you choose the people you put into it. For Somerset, it is also an opportunity for a different future, where he can control his destiny.
