Summary

A futuristic noir thriller: When Jess Green is recruited by the Unit for her unusual abilities, she hopes she’s finally found safe haven. Unfortunately life in Department Thirteen (Crime Solutions) is anything but.

A sinister brotherhood are stealing human organs, and Jess and her uncooperative handler are put on the case. Their quest takes them into the lair of a rich philanthropist and his beautiful, brilliant daughter who together run The Eternity Fund, anti-aging as it’s never been known before.

Haunted by flashbacks and convinced that something within the organisation is dreadfully familiar, Jess finds herself recalling the shadows of her past and wondering whether she will ever truly be free…

addictive post-apocalyptic dystopian fairytale

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. Beautifully observed characterisations; highly original and endearling female protagonist with an uncanny talent, who comes head to head with a brilliantly realised, scary societal solution to anti aging, and a twisting, beguiling plot driven through a vicerally depicted, seductively believable future world. Very ocassional i got a bit lost, but it didn't affect the story's overall excitement . I'd like a copy of the book to reread the complex ending - but then i'm someone who always needs to get the crossword puzzle out. Looking forward to the second and third in the trilogy, not least see how the bigger canvas is painted. What destroyed the earth initially? Will notions of anti-ageing ever lose traction? How can Jess make sense of her future... ?

What did you like best about this story?

Being thrown headlong into a confident, assured narrative and left to glean the context and story like a local. The writer's authentic voice and engaging style creates a fully formed furturescape, yet simultaneously maintains a deep sense of mystery. Reminded me of Pullman's writing, in that way.

Which character – as performed by Imogen Church – was your favourite?

Jess, of course. But they're all engaging, particularly Mo, and Jess's mentor, who's name i've forgotten. I loved the golumesque librarian too.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but I only wish I had the time - instead I was listening in snatched moments on the tube and whilst cooking meals for hoards. Would buy the book too, if it gets into print. It should.

Good concept but quite boring

Well, the discription of this book made it quite intriguing so I went for it. But even if the concept is really cool it took me way to long to get hold of the actual story. And by then I had become quite tired of it. I can't say I was overly excited about the ending either.

An intelligent take on the future maybe

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

What (who) would you sacrifice to live forever?

Any additional comments?

The future is a scary place with dark roots in the past in this chilling tale of a society where people are divided into the valued and the disposable.

a good start but a missed oppotunity

The world in which our main character occupies is rich and interesting, the characters are brilliant I foud myself wanting to know more about them but our main character is the opposite, uninteresting is the best word to describe her. The ending felt rushed and incomplete so I am hopi g for another book or two. A missed oppotunity.

Engaging story but appalling English

What would have made The Eternity Fund better?

Attention to English language. Even MS word would have corrected most of the errors.

Would you ever listen to anything by Liz Monument again?

No

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Yes - actually the narrator was the saving grace.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Nothing

Any additional comments?

The story itself was reasonably good but there were so many 'English' errors that I became very frustrated. Poorly written - "Mo and me" ?? For goodness sake, that's grammar 101 - "Mo and I"!! Made up words and repetition of others, stock phrases over used. Sad, because otherwise I would have enjoyed the content.

Fast paced Scifi thriller full of twists and tech

An exciting escape into a dark future through the eyes of a newly recruited heroine. Wonderfully narrated edge of the seat stuff.

Very interesting futuristic dystopian story.

What made the experience of listening to The Eternity Fund the most enjoyable?

Good world building. Writer has excellent descriptive skills allowing the listener to get into the story. Liz Monument drops you into the middle of the story and gives character background and develops the mystery until the end.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Eternity Fund?

Several : Meeting Reginald, Cake with Rosie, Meeting the Fortune teller, Meeting the geneticist, Finding the wasteland lair and the horrors she saw there. I really thought the story was clever and well written.

Have you listened to any of Imogen Church’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I cried once, laughed a couple of times.

Any additional comments?

I was sad when the book was over and wanted more. I wonder if a follow up could be written?

Great new sci-fi entry!

The plot and characters are first-rate. Although I found the primary villains just a little "over the top" there is still room for the the mere two-bit and sleazy villains to add that extra color!

Well done and highly recommended.

It wasn't what I expected, but I enjoyed it.

What did you love best about The Eternity Fund?

I enjoyed the pace. It took its time to build the story, characters, & environments. I expected a more paranormal type of story, but really it's a mystery set in a kind of sci-fi / future culture.

What does Imogen Church bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I liked her voice, it's on the mellow side. She used just the right amount of inflections to suggest emotions without being over bearing.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No. I was pleasantly surprised by this book and hope to see more by this author.

Any additional comments?
