Summary

The first book in Enid Blyton's much loved Magic Faraway Tree series - read by Kate Winslet.

The Enchanted Wood is the first wonderful story in the Faraway Tree series by the world's best-loved children's author, Enid Blyton.

When Joe, Beth and Frannie move to a new home, they discover an Enchanted Wood just outside their doorstep. Soon they find the Faraway Tree, which is the beginning of many magical adventures....

Join them and their new friends Silky the fairy, Saucepan Man and Moonface, as they discover which new land awaits them at the top of the Faraway Tree.

Will they visit the Land of Treats, the Land of Spells, or the Land of Do-As-You-Please? Come with them on an amazing adventure - there will be magic and fun at every turn.

This recording follows the original text, first published in 1939. It does not contain the following chapters, which were first written for Enid Blyton's Omnibus! published in 1952, and later inserted into some editions of The Enchanted Wood

Childhood memories!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Enchanted Wood to be better than the print version?

No, there is always merit to reading stories yourself and making the characters your own

Who was your favorite character and why?

Love them all for nostalgic reasons, though they aren't actually always very nice people... I found the children, and even the 'adults' Silky, Moonface and Saucean Man to be really mean at times. Especially to Connie in The Folk of The Faraway Tree, who yes, was annoying, but realistically not as unpleasant or arrogant as the others!

Would you listen to another book narrated by Kate Winslet?

I have downloaded and listened to this series, but I dont know about any others. Kate was very good and I liked the way she portrayed most of the characters, but it was odd listening to someone so familiar. Think i prefer unknowns, or the ones that do it very well (Stephen Fry for eg)

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

To annoyance yes.. Why on earth were the names changed from Bessie and Fanny to Beth and Franny?? I found that very odd, and a weird insult to the original tale by Enid Blyton.

Made car journeys enjoyable

I bought this series for my son to listen to on the short hops to and from school. It's his nanny's favourite series. He loved them and sometimes didn't want to get out of the car when we got home. Certainly recommended for infant age kids on a car journey

Love the Story, Disappointed in Changes

I have loved this classic story since childhood and was very disappointed and confused by the unnecessary name changes that have occurred.

Why is Bessie now Beth and why is Fanny now Franny. It doesn't make sense ?

What a shame. Apart from this, the story is as good as always.

Not so sure kate winslet as the narrator however, I do think having someone famous or identifiable to that level is distracting from the story. (I think this for most famous people narrating audiobooks)

One Of My Favourite Chilldhood Books

Where does The Enchanted Wood rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It is right at the top!

Who was your favorite character and why?

I love all the characters in the faraway tree. Enid wrote wonderful characters and settings that were perfect for daydreamers.

Have you listened to any of Kate Winslet’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Yes and it is just as good. Kate has a wonderful reading voice.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No, but I enjoyed all the adventures and settings.

Painless long car journeys with two young boys!

Any additional comments?

These books were my favourite when I was a child and I've loved listening to them all over again as brought to life by Kate Winslet. My children also love them and roared laughing particularly at the deaf old Saucepan Man and we've been on several very long journeys without the usual squabbles and mithering. Highly recommend.

Average

My eight year old daughter liked it, but having to listen to it with her in the car, thought it dull and fragmented. There is no real story line, just a series of small adventures. I never did like Enid Blyton’s books. I always thought them too shallow. Winslet’s excellent narration is it’s saving grace.
