About this listen

A modern Fairy story, set in the city of Cardiff, ‘The Enchanted Violin’ is a dark mix of reality and fantasy, drawing on the rich mythology of two diverse cultures: China and Wales.

Two Chinese music students, Jay Lee and Xiao Mai, meet at the Welsh School of Music. He is soon obsessed by her, but her love is music. Xiao Mai needs a good instrument to play, otherwise she may be forced to drop out of university, so she sets out with Jay Lee to find one.

One day they hear violin music pouring out from the Castle Arcade, Xiao Mai is overcome and starts to play an imaginary violin on the street. Jay Lee is shocked and forces her to stop. They go together to the Cardiff Violin shop where they meet the Enchanter, an old man dressed in strange clothes from a bygone era, who is not all he seems. He gives Xiao Mai the violin, intending to trap her soul by means of her obsession and imprison it in the instrument.
