About this listen

One of Rosamunde Pilcher's classic stories, now in unabridged audio download.

Virginia Keile has a secret dream. To have a second chance at loving the tall, handsome Cornish farmer she met - and foolishly lost - the heady summer she was a debutante.

Life has taught Virginia a great deal in 27 years - about wedding a titled bachelor picked out by her mother, about a lonely marriage that ended in her husband's accidental death, and about nearly losing her children to her husband's mother and bossy Nanny. Now she has come back to picturesque Cornwall to rent a battered seaside cottage. For herself and for the children. And to discover if this time she can fill an empty house with love.

Loved it. After the shell seekers I can't wait to discover more of her stories

I wanted to love this story, but I struggled with it a little. Along with wanting to give the main character a good slap for most of it I do wish that Rosamunde Pilcher had thought to add dates to her chapters. It took me a long time to be able to actually picture this story in my mind because I could not work out when it was supposed to be happening. Everyone would be acting very prim and old fashioned and I was picturing characters in long dresses and bonnets when suddenly jeans and orangeade were mentioned! I also don’t like how her characters never say please. They say thank you, but never please!
I also need to mention the travelling from London to Cornwall, on a train, with groceries including butter, in a cardboard box when it has been mentioned many times that it was a heatwave. Little things like that bother me unfortunately. Anyway, it was a reasonably pleasant story, thank you.

An pleasant, odd, quaint story
