About this listen

The Effective Board Member: What Every Board Member Should Know is a transformational tale of the journey to boardroom effectiveness. It combines Karl's (The Governor's) knowledge and experience both of governance in an international context and an initial study of human behavior.

Using four of the 12 characters from the governance forum Zoo, The Governor's latest book consolidates his years of teaching on governance, strategy and leadership in an innovative way that is sure to engage experienced and new board members alike. Inside you will find a unique perspective on topics including board appointments, roles and responsibilities, critical issues for boards, blind spots, Board Effectiveness Reviews (BER), traits of highly effective board members, and most importantly - boardroom behavior.

This book is sure to equip, empower, and educate board members everywhere. It's ingenious and contemporary style, outlined in five practical steps will leave you with a sound understanding not only of the main statutory responsibilities, but a good grasp of all of the practical information you need as an experienced, new or aspiring board member.

The Effective Board Member is set to change the world one board member at a time! Based on real experiences and sound business principles, it is an invaluable and accessible source of practical advice.

This is a well written and valuable book on what it means to execute an effective board. Read the book in small chunks as the amount of information can be overwhelming particularly for those new to governing.

Clear and concise board advice

The book is good for board members interested in improving their contribution in the board room. As a new chair I find it very useful. Use of relevant examples, cases and scenarios may have added further value.

If you know absolutely nothing about boards this is a good place to start, othewise you may find the material covered very basic (covering how to write a CV to get a board position, where to find board vacancies etc), There are a number of podcasts on this topic on I found more useful (eg Better Boards Podcast Series) where they talk to a number of high profile company board members.
