Robert J. Sawyer
In 2059, two vastly different groups of people portrayed by the compelling trio of Brendan Fraser (Academy Award winner), Luke Kirby (Emmy Award winner), and Vanessa Sears (Dora Award winner) undergo cryonic suspension. While their bodies are frozen, their minds, still active and awake, are uploaded into a massive quantum computer. The first group are all astronauts, about to leave Earth on a one-way interstellar colonization mission. The second group consists of convicted murderers and volunteers who elect to serve their sentences in a virtual-reality prison. But while both groups are suspended, a global cataclysm devastates most of the Earth, and their cryosleep is extended by more than 500 years.

The concept of cryonic suspension and the merging of minds into a quantum computer held so much potential. The idea of two contrasting groups, astronauts embarking on an interstellar mission and convicted criminals serving virtual-reality sentences, fascinated me. I was eager to explore the complex dynamics and the challenges they would face in a world devastated by a cataclysm.
Unfortunately, my enthusiasm quickly waned as the narrative became overshadowed by an excessive focus on identity politics. It felt as if the story was ticking off a checklist, prioritizing the inclusion of various identities rather than developing a nuanced and engaging plot. This approach made the storytelling feel forced and contrived, detracting from the overall enjoyment of the book.
Regrettably, I reached a point where I couldn't continue listening. Life is too short, and I have other books that deserve my attention. In hindsight, I should have paid more attention to the reviews before starting this audiobook. The presence of Brendan Fraser in the cast initially sparked my interest, leading me to believe that it would be a truly captivating experience.
In conclusion, if you're looking for a science fiction audiobook that explores complex themes and pushes the boundaries of imagination, "The Downloaded" may not live up to your expectations. The excessive focus on identity politics detracts from the potential of the premise, making it a tedious listen. I regret not reading the reviews but as it was so recently released, there weren’t many, and hope that future listeners will approach this book with caution.
Disappointed

Nevertheless, as others have noted, there were some elements that were clearly shoehorned in that added nothing to the story and pulled you out of the story. The 2 elements that were most noticeable were the comments about how people not getting vaccinated for Covid were selfish (this is set in the future so this was a ridiculous reference) and having a character who was transgender who appears, has a few conversations and disappears. Neither of these additions were at all relevant to the story so one assumes that they were included solely as a form of virtue signaling.
Notwithstanding the above, this was an easy listen and enjoyable.
There is a good story there but some unnecessary preaching

A good story with plenty off action and uniqueness to keep you listening
