Summary
大手商社のエリート社員、桂木憲一は、妻、大学生の娘と幸せな家庭を築いていた。が、パスポート更新のために、戸籍謄本を取り寄せたことから、生活が暗転しはじめる。なんと、最新の謄本には、「婚姻」欄に、妻の里美と並んで、マリア・ロペスというフィリピン人女性の名が書かれていたのだ。 実は憲一は20年ほど前、マニラ赴任中に、このマリアと結婚式を挙げながら、一人で帰国したままになっていたのだった。役所に確認すると、そのマリアから、フィリピンの婚姻証明書が送られてきたため、憲一の戸籍に名前が入ったのだという。しかし、日本では重婚は認められていないはずではないか？ 役所に問い合わせると、「刑法には重婚罪がありますが、民法上は、当事者からの請求がないかぎり、行政が重婚を解消する手続きは、定められていないのです」という意外な答えが返ってきた（警察が刑事罰として動くことも事実上ない）。 さらに数日後、憲一の自宅に、一通の封書が届く。中を確認した妻は悲鳴をあげた。 送られてきたのは新たな戸籍謄本で、そこには「長男」として「ケン」という名が書かれていた。 それにしてもマリアはなぜ、今になってこのような行動に出たのか――。 事実に基づく驚天動地のストーリー。
