Summary

How much do you know about the couple next door?

When Emily and Ben move in next door to Dr Burman and his wife, Anita, they are keen to get to know their new neighbours. Outgoing and sociable, Emily tries to befriend the doctor’s wife, but Anita is strangely subdued, barely leaving the house, and terrified of answering the phone.

When Emily goes missing a few weeks later, Ben is plunged into a panic. His wife has left him a note, but can she really have abandoned him for another man? Or has Emily’s curiosity about the couple next door led her straight into danger?

A gripping, sinister thriller with a twist you won’t see coming from the international best seller Lisa Stone.

Poor.

An interesting premise but this is not a good book. It's full of one dimensional and stupid characters making inexplicable decisions, all delivered in a writing style reminiscent of a secondary school creative writing exercise.

I don't usually write reviews but felt I had to, as I am surprised by the generally positive feedback.

One to avoid.

The most unlikely storyline ever .... just nonsense

I can’t believe how many positive reviews of this rubbish there are. It makes me wonder about the authenticity of reviews in general. The storyline is palpable nonsense with, perhaps, a touch of racism/xenophobia + misogyny underlying shallow characterisations. It’s odious unlikely stuff altogether. Best avoided.

Warning includes animal abuse!

I have listened to other books by Lisa Stone, and love her writings as Cathy Glass, and was really looking forward to this book... But I cannot handle anything to do with animal abuse and this does include animal abuse! I didn’t finish listening to this-at the moment an animal is abused that book is over for me!

The “Doctor”

Anyone with any kind of general or medical knowledge will severely struggle to listen to this book without wanting to die - and not be reanimated. This is a tale of what happens when authors don’t do their research. According to this novel, the following things are possible: anaesthetists are failed doctors and resented in the medical community, cryogenics can be achieved in the garden shed and if you steal an old woman and commit a plethora of obvious public crimes the police really don’t mind. Oh, and if you go missing but leave a scrap of paper, but take no money, clothes or means of transportation the police are totally chill with that and will leave you to your new life. Also, if you enjoy books that feature no description, characterisation or plausible consistent motives then please you’re in the right place! Final word on The Doctor: don’t trust people with suspicious physical differences, such as an evil glowing green eye!

A dreadful totally unrelateable story

I can't believe the good reviews this book has received. The best thing about it was the narrator. The story is awful, completely unrelateable and unbelieveable, it isn't possible to bond with any of the characters, the suspense doesn't exist because it is so predictable and it just never seemed to end.

I really really wanted to leave it 1/2 way through but kept giving it a chance thinking it may just have been a slow starter.

Honestly, if you are looking for something with suspense, that has a good believeable and unerving storyline and that is well written...this is not the book for you.

Unputable down.

Oh my gosh. What a story. Kept me on the edge of my seat. Brilliant, and narrated perfectly. If you choose no other book choose this one.

Good story line a bit too long in parts but I enjoyed it. Good narration.

Fast paced thrill ride

This was a very thrilling read. My attention was grabbed from the very beginning all the way until the end. The charactor development was well rounded and the narrator did an excellent job of voicing through each charactor. The main charactors were likeable except Alisha. I couldn't get past the fact she was weak and passive the whole book, apparently so... All in all a really good read if you're on a budget and looking for a decent page turner.

Silly and Awful

I’m always ready to suspend my disbelief when reading fiction, but the plot holes in this story are simply too large to ignore. In addition, each character displays a level of stupidity that sapped what little interest I had in the silly plot.

CRAZY

This story is Super Suspenseful.... Creepy and Scary. Not to give anything away, but Beware of the Doctor next door. He's not dealing with a full deck. ???
Parts of this story are very disturbing, they were difficult to read. Pure torture and agony, very scary. But the impact added to the story, making it a Great Thriller.....
Very interesting suspenseful thriller.
I will be remembering this one. 👍
