Summary

The Divided Mind is the crowning achievement of Dr. John E. Sarno's long and successful career as a groundbreaking medical pioneer. While his earlier books dealt almost exclusively with musculoskeletal pain disorders, here Dr. Sarno addresses the entire spectrum of psychosomatic (mind-body) disorders. In Dr. Sarno's view, the crucial interaction between the reasonable, rational, ethical, moral conscious mind and the repressed feelings of emotional pain, hurt, sadness, and anger characteristic of the unconscious mind is the basis for many mind-body disorders.

The Divided Mind traces the history of psychosomatic medicine, including Freud's crucial role as well as his failures. Most important, it describes the psychology of the human condition that is responsible for the broad range of psychosomatic illness. Dr. Sarno believes that the failure of medicine's practitioners to recognize and appropriately treat mind-body disorders has produced public health and economic problems of major proportions in the United States. One of the most interesting and important aspects of psychosomatic phenomena is the fact that knowledge and awareness of the process clearly have healing powers.

Critic reviews

"Dr Sarno brilliantly explores the chasm between the conscious and unconscious minds, where psychosomatic ailments originate." (Mehmet Oz, M.D., co-author of You: The Owner's Manual)

Divided indeed.

Really interesting listen. Concept of mind and body is unbelievable but, I have an open mind and I am going to put it into practice. Knowledge is power and I think I need to re-listen this book a few times.

Incredible...

Hi, I listened to this book because it was suggested to me. The concepts in the book and possibilities are indescribably positive for the human race. They are no less than this. The book offers a radical reframing of health and wellbeing and the treatment of many common conditions. I am left stunned but at the same time there is logic in what is proposed.
I found the first four chapters harder going but something intrigued me to stick with it. The latter chapters and much more engaging and energising. The additional interview with the author at the end is beautiful. His authenticity shines though. As a sufferer if anxiety, insomnia and IBS for several decades it is really making me think. Highly recommend the book and highly recommend you stay with it until the end.

Thank you Dr Sarno

Dr John Sarno will eventually go down in history as an amazing pioneer. Shame his work is not recognised sooner. He is the best doctor you will ever know.

Dr Sarno is a genius and an angel

Dr Sarno is a genius and an angel. I've fully absorbed this TMS theory and I'm now working on doing my homework daily to get rid of all my chronic pain symptoms. Very very exciting!

Life-changing book

John Sarno's work has set me on the road to recovery after 3 years of debilitating tendon pain. Given their abysmal record in treating chronic pain I am astounded that the traditional medical community hasn't embraced his approach. I guess there isn't as much money in looking at emotions as there is in manufacturing drugs - unfortunately it's patients who suffer. Thank you Dr Sarno from the bottom of my heart.

Great book, great narrator

Not an easy book, but an important one and the narrator's voice made it pleasant.

Intriguing

The arguments are pretty convincing, what's left is to test them out. Some of it reminded me of Burns and his hidden emotion theory of anxiety.

Read with an open mind

If you have an open mind, this book can help you understand that many of our physical disorders have their root in a psychosomatic mind-body process, and that understanding it can help us all to a much happier and more healthy life.
