About this listen

'Once again, Michael Wood, the master of horror and suspense, has written a book that put me through the wringer with its taut, horrifying, dark and devious storyline.’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

From the dark mind behind the DCI Matilda Darke series, comes the next novel in a gripping new series.

Dr Olivia Winter is back. And she’s got a brand new case to solve.

A BRUTAL MURDER

When Isaac McFadden is found with the dismembered body of a young man in the boot of his car, it’s an easy conviction for the jury. But, then a notebook is discovered in Isaac’s house, and the police believe they have a serial killer on their hands.

A CRYPTIC CODE

Within the pages of the notebook is a chart written in a code, which DI Linus Sutton believes holds the location of more bodies. Made up of seemingly random words, numbers and symbols, and with a suspect who is refusing to talk, Sutton enlists the help of Forensic Psychologist Dr Olivia Winter.

THE FINAL GIRL

Having previously survived attacks from two killers, Olivia is the real life ‘final girl’. But can she unlock the code before her luck runs out?

Gripping but so dark ... basically finished listening in a few days. Did not listen to the first book in the series but no problem - not even sure if I want to listen to the first one. Look forward to the next book in these series. Very good narration, although I usually do not like women narrative.

One of the most gripping novels this year

2nd book featuring Dr Olivia Winter and once again Wood has produced a dark and disturbing serial killer story. When Isaac McFadden is stopped by the police and they find a dismembered body in his boot, there is no reprieve and he is found guilty of murder. Through out his entire police interview he responded 'No Comment' to every question (even those no directly related to the crime).
Months later his daughter clearing out his house finds a diary and a box of trophies that imply he may have killed as many as 12 people. Stuck and with nowhere to go DI Linus Sutton visit Olivia in London to see if she can may sense of the code that is included in the diary. The pressure increases when a new item and code entry is sent to Olivia at the Newcastle police station where she is working with Linus.
As if tracking down the bodies left by a serial killer isn't stressful enough she has to deal with the fact that a new drama about her father is about to air on TV and since he real identity has become known there are some in her profession questioning her objectivity whether she is the right person to be investigation other serial killers.
A brilliant book, but listening to it meant that it was much harder to follow the code discussions as you couldn't see them on the page.

Good 2nd installment
