Summary

Bloomsbury presents The Devil's Bargain by Stella Rimington, read by Penelope Rawlins.

One lie put the nation at risk. Another might save it.

The new spy thriller from Stella Rimington, former head of MI5.

Harry Bristow: policeman, father, chauffeur, fraud.

In 1988, Harry made one mistake: he took a bribe, letting a man he knew as Igor into Britain - and he’s regretted it ever since. So when he recognises Igor many years later as his newly elected MP, he knows he has to come clean. But the MP recognises him, too - and Harry fears what he might do next.

Peter Robinson, MP: salesman, politician, bachelor, spy.

It was easy to get into Britain in 1988 as an illegal, working deep undercover, but the break-up of the Soviet Union cut Robinson off from his homeland. He’s inching closer to Britain’s levers of power - but now the one man who knows his secret has reappeared. With no way to contact Moscow, he must act fast to preserve his position and reap its rewards - at any cost.

Manon Tyler, CIA analyst, has just boarded a plane to London - with a report on Russian illegals to read.

"Damn good." (Daily Telegraph)

"This is something rare: the spy novel that prizes authenticity over fabrication, that is true to the character and spirit of intelligence work." (Mail on Sunday

Terrible narration

This is probably the worst narration I’ve experienced on audible. Which is a shame as it detracts and distracts from the story. The narrator’s accents are dreadful, particularly male accents. Would recommend reading rather than listening to this book.

Disappoint ing and irritating narration

I felt the story was not up to Dame Stella’s previous works - it was formulaic and predictable. Other spy writers are now vying for Le Carre’s mantle with far more nuanced and intricate plots and characterisation. But most of all, the narration kept me constantly irritated - male voices particularly accented are not this lady’s forte. Perhaps the stories of Manon will develop - I hope so

Weak

A lesser plot than previous books. A good build up and character outline, but a rushed end and weak finish. Almost as if the last (2?) chapters and been abridged to save time/space. A real shame.

Glad to see her back . Read all her books and suggest others do the same. I feel the must have been some past experiences involved in this story . The American Embassy moved and marsham street occupants well know to author but not mentioned, why not ... I like the detail as do many, but then experiences make the story.

Good book but prefer previous voice over

Prefer the artist that did the previous books. This one is a trying too hard and it’s distracting. Very staccato style so not relaxing to listen to.

Fast paced thriller

A new Stella Remington - hurrah! Well up to her usual standard and introducing @ new female protagonist. Pity about some of the attempts at pronunciation, particularly of English rivers! But, I listened to it in one sitting and am now going to start over. Looking forward to Manon’s next outing

Good idea and plot, terrible writing. Sorry, really wanted to like this author and binge all her work. Not now :(

Terrible narration

I kept waiting for something vaguely surprising to happen but the only unexpected thing about this audio book was how bad the narrations was.

Outstanding book

Some of the readers accents are a bit questionable but otherwise a thrilling listen. Bravo.
