About this listen

A brave young gentlewoman dares to defy an infuriatingly arrogant earl. Brave and beautiful Miss Emily Wingrave knows that it will not be easy to help her older widowed sister deal with the trustee of her late husband’s estate.

The trustee is none other than the willful, arrogant Earl of Meriden, and she is determined to stop him from meddling with her sister’s struggling family. But as Emily engages the provocative Earl in a battle of wits and wills, she learns just how well armed he is: His surprising charm and seductive techniques will make her worry that she might very well be the one who surrenders.

Great story, funny banter between the two main characters, and an enjoyable plot. Very like Heyer, which is a good thing. Well read, despite a few mispronunciations and a few dodgy Yorkshire accents. Mary Jane Wells gets the wit and the flow with her narration, not at all stilted like so many readers of audiobooks. And her male characters sound normal - female narrators sometimes make male characters sound pompous and old, definitely not what you want in a romantic lead. Really enjoyed this.

Lighthearted and charming story with charismatic main characters and witty conversations. Beautifully narrated. A relaxing, fun read.

Not a bad story. I dont like his character though, he is such a brute to the point of being violent. At least he does acknowledge that he has temper and apologises when he has behaved atrociously. She also has a temper to match his just not physically which puts her at a disadvantage. In my opinion they make a horrible couple as they are too much alike. Some great bamter though

The narrator's accents are awful. A marquis's niece and a parson would not have marked regional accents. The story is amusing.

Content warning: this one does not hold as up well as some of the other books by this author, ther 'hero' is rough and violent in a way that is often played as 'sexy' and 'charming'. He also is administers corporal punishment and treats. Not as pleasant a read of some of the others becauseof this. Otherwise a decent plot but the cruelty and brutality is bothering
