Summary

Best-selling phenomenon Simon McCleave is back with a gripping, atmospheric new crime thriller series set on the Isle of Anglesey.

Will there be blood in the water?

Three years ago, DCI Laura Hart was the top hostage and crisis negotiator for the Greater Manchester Police. Then her husband was kidnapped. Despite her best efforts to reason with the criminals, he was brutally murdered.

Now living on the Isle of Anglesey in Wales, Laura is slowly healing. Then she gets a call: armed drug dealers have seized a tourist boat—and her 10-year-old son Jake is on board. There’s no other negotiator available, and the police need her to step up.

With the life of a loved one yet again on the line and memories of the last time she failed still searingly fresh, Laura is living her worst nightmare. Can she lay to rest the ghosts of her past in time to save her son?

An atmospheric, edge-of-your-seat story that’s perfect for fans of LJ Ross, Ann Cleeves and Elly Griffiths.

drawn out

I don't like books that flit from one year to another. found the love scenes between a wife and her dead husband bizarre won't be buying anymore in thelus series. Well narrated

Annoying turn of phrase

The author has the incredibly annoying habit of starting sentences like this:

“Looking up Laura did X”
“Catching her breath Laura did X”
“Sitting on a chair Laura did X”

and so on. It is awful to listen to and i stopped listening twice before plodding on to the end.

A bit annoying

Not a lover of the Welsh accent so found the narrative a bit annoying, story was okay but the jumping around was a bit confusing

Predictable and Cheesy

This started off really well but soon disintegrated into a predictable and squirm worthy tale. I don't recommend it.

Good start to the series

The to-ing and fro-ing of the story line was annoying - but the plot hung together well.

Brilliant!

I have read lots of Simon McCleave books from the Ruth Hunter series and I loved them. But the narrator began to irritate me with the over pronunciation of the Welsh placenames. I gave myself a break then dipped my toe back in! Still annoying as I spent many times in all parts of Wales in my early years, yet couldnt understand the place names when spoken and had to look them up on the text version of the books. Then I noticed a different narrator was employed for the Anglesey books and plunged in! Brilliant. Her scouse is excellent, as a semi-scouser myself (born in Liverpool, raised in Wirral) I am quite critical of a poor portrayal, but there were only a few little slips where she "spoke proper" ending her words and not being quite as thick as usual when doing Red's voice!
The story was excellent and the scenic descriptions made me want to revisit Anglesey this summer. I thought Simon created the characters with great skill and I love that he uses older females in such a positive way and with an understanding that they too have desires and needs that are usually only attributed to younger people!

The ending was nicely tied up, yet with a huge cliffhanger to make me go straight to book 2 in the series❤

Sorry, poorly written, saved by the narrator

When an author writes adrenaline pumping repeatedly, it lacks any imagination. I won’t spoil the plot because there wasn’t one for me.

Like watching a film. Great action.

Some of the characters were a little cringy but loved the high impact story line. Would definitely recommend.
